Tom Lopach is a Democratic political advisor in the state of Montana. He served as chief of staff to Gov. Career

Early career

Lopach began working in politics during a summer internship at the White House in 1996. He worked in the office of the public liaison in Bill Clinton’s (D) administration. After graduating from Gonzaga University in 1996, he moved back to Montana where he worked for then-Rep. Pat Williams (D-Mont.), who did not seek re-election that year. He spent time working in advocacy organizations on LGBT issues and then as a fundraising staffer for Margarethe Cammermeyer’s (D-Wash.) unsuccessful run for U.S. House.[3]

Ted Kennedy advisor

From 1999 to 2007, Lopach was an advisor to former Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), working as Kennedy’s national finance director and as the executive director of the Committee for a Democratic Majority, an organization affiliated with Kennedy.[4] After working with Kennedy, Lopach was finance director for the DSCC from 2007 to 2009.[5]

In 2010, Lopach joined the U.S. Senate staff of Jon Tester (D-Mont.) as Tester’s chief of staff. Lopach replaced Stephanie Schriock, who left Tester’s staff to become executive director of EMILYs List. At the time of his hiring, Lopach said he would help Tester to concentrate on creating jobs in the state, according to the Helena Independent Record. In a statement, he said, “It’s an honor to be back serving fellow Montanans again. From 2014 to December 2016, Lopach was the executive director of the DSCC, the Democratic Party’s campaign arm for races for the U.S. Senate. Lopach was appointed executive director when Tester was elected as the organization’s chair in November 2014.[7] His time with the organization was one in which Democrats needed to gain five seats in the 2016 election to regain a majority in the Senate.[8] He left the DSCC in December 2016 when Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) was elected the next chair; Van Hollen appointed Mindy Myers to the position.[9]

In February 2017, Lopach joined Subject Matter, a communications and lobbying firm.[10]

On July 20, 2017, Bullock named Lopach his chief of staff, replacing Tracy Stone-Manning, who returned to conservation work with the National Wildlife Federation in Montana. At the time of the hiring, Bullock said that Lopach’s “extensive experience in public service and government will ensure this administration continues to focus on growing the economy, creating jobs, and providing essential services Montanans and businesses depend on.”[2]
