He was born on October 28, 1967, in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA.
Massarotti went to Waltham High School. He majored in English and Classics from Tufts University in 1989.
From 1994 to 2008, he worked for the Boston Herald. There, Massarotti covered the Boston Red Sox.

Tony joined the staff of the Boston Globe in September 2008.

In 2005, Massarotti and John Harper released a book titled – ”A Tale of Two Cities: The 2004 Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry and the War for the Pennant.” In the book, they detailed Red Sox and the Yankees in parallel storylines through the summer of 2004.
In 2007, he co-authored another book, called – ”Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits” with David Ortiz.

In February 2023, he was suspended without pay by Beasley Media due to a comment he made. The incident happened late in Friday’s show.
