Synopsis:
The Jones family has had a rough couple of years. First, there was the death of patriarch Ryan. Then, his wife Eva (Lucie Guest) disappeared one night before being found outside her house by her daughter Sami (Jordan Zavisha) the next day. The police never believed Eva’s claims that she was kidnapped from her driveway and neither did Nancy (Linda Grass), Ryan’s mother who is at odds with Eva due to not believing her son’s death was the result of a simple heart attack. A year later, things are still tense within the Jones household, with Eva still grappling with her trauma and her estrangement with Nancy. Her announcement that she’s received a job in New York City only leads to a disastrous family dinner, with Eva vanishing from her bedroom that same night. Sami is certain Eva’s past kidnapper has struck again, but with neither the police nor her grandmother taking the situation seriously, it’s up to her to uncover the truth before it’s too late to save her mother.
Story:
It won’t take someone who went through their own Nancy Drew teen phase to figure out this mystery. With only two real suspects to speak of, the possibilities for who Eva’s kidnapper is are limited. It also would’ve been interesting had the movie kept the status of Eva’s “disappearances” ambiguous for a little while, leaving the viewer to wonder if maybe there’s some truth to what the police and Nancy think has happened to Eva. Instead, the film makes it no secret that Eva isn’t unstable and that she has in fact been kidnapped.

But even with that and the possibility that you’ll be able to answer the titular question well in advance, Who Kidnapped My Mom? develops great tension through Sami’s investigation. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as the resilient teen works to rescue her mother at the same time Eva is fighting to escape her prison and get home to her family. Unfortunately, the stellar finale is marred by a climax that sees several characters acting uncharacteristic ally shortsighted and slothful. These moments of idiocy running back-to-back only makes them more noticeable-and irritating.

From beginning to end, Sami and Eva Jones are a mother-daughter duo you’ll love and sympathize with. Even before Eva’s second (more prolonged) abduction, they’d gone through a lot. Between losing their father/husband and Eva dealing with mental health struggles exacerbated by a cruel-tongued mother-in-law, the second kidnapping was just the cherry on top of a sundae of suffering. Even though she isn’t focused on as much as her mother and sister, Grace’s pain is also palpable whenever the young girl is onscreen. As such, you’ll cheer for Eva to take back her freedom and for Sami and Grace to do what they can to find her. While Sami does most of the detective work, Grace helps her a few times, with one of these instances showing that Grace is just as clever as her big sister.
For the most part, though, the rest of the characters aren’t as appealing. While Sami’s friend/budding boyfriend Gabe and friendly neighbor/family friend Dane are both lovable in their own ways, grandmother Nancy and Detective Campbell are nothing but infuriating. While this is an intended effect at first, given how they become obstacles in Sami’s quest to find her mother, the movie later attempts to convince viewers that Nancy and Campbell aren’t so bad after all. But Campbell doesn’t get enough screentime for this kind of development and the film’s efforts to redeem Nancy crumble under the weight of her inexcusably callous behavior. SPOILER ALERT As for post-reveal Dane, while he’s not the lamest Lifetime antagonist out there, his motivation is still incredibly predictable. At least his plan of kidnapping the entire Jones family (sans Nancy) and the implication that Dane’s willing to harm Sami to get her to comply with his delusion add a splash of twisted depth to an otherwise paper-thin villain. Acting:
The supporting cast of Who Kidnapped My Mom? is a mixed bag. Tommy Schiltz is effectively endearing as Gabe while Kelsey Flower does a similarly good job as Dane. SPOILER ALERT Flower is just as good once Dane’s true nature comes out, despite his character’s all-too-familiar personality. Spoilers Over On the lower end of the spectrum are Linda Grass and Kim Faires as Nancy and Detective Campbell, with their stiff and one-note performances further derailing the script’s sloppy attempts at humanizing their cavalier characters. Of the supporting actors playing female characters, Ceilidh MacDonald is the best, selling Grace as an adorable and surprisingly astute kid willing to help Sami during her mission at a moment’s notice.

The main players are a lot steadier in their acting. Jordan Zavisha is shaky in places, but elsewhere, she gives a strong film debut as an emotional but strong-willed girl determined to save her mother, regardless of how much resistance she faces. Lucie Guest’s acting is much steadier, allowing her to consistently depict Eva’s anguish. Whether she’s coping with PTSD, grappling with familial strife, or trying to find a way out of her captivity, Eva will have all your sympathy thanks to Guest’s performance.
Overall:
Writing-wise, Who Kidnapped My Mom? doesn’t boast any plot twists that’ll have you gasping in shock once they’re revealed. There’s also a few characters who are sure to annoy you with their sour personalities and their actors’ stilted performances. But the script has swift enough pacing and a strong enough sense of dread that it’s easy to get swept up in the drama surrounding Eva’s abduction and Sami’s efforts to rescue her. Combine that with the compelling half of the character/actor roster and you’ve got a Lifetime kidnapping thriller well worth enjoying over your favorite comfort food and a caffeinated beverage that hopefully doesn’t have traumatic memories associated with it (it makes sense in context, I promise.)
