The aftermath of David Hanley’s death played out in Sunday night’s episode of Burden of Truth on The CW with Joanna having to make herself battle ready not only due to her own state of grief over his passing (despite their being estranged) but also to find out who was the true culprit (despite an inept investigation lead by Officer Mercer).
As expected, suspects were lined up and questioned by Mercer and Owen. They included Ben Matheson and his daughter Taylor; Joanna herself; Billy’s brother Shane [who was supposed to stay in the very motel room where David was killed]; Amy Carr, the sister of one of David’s sexual “victims” from back in the day and Gerrilynn, who became the prime suspect because of her filing a civil suit against David.

First of all, does anyone else have suspicions about Shane, Billy’s brother? He wanted to stay in the room David was in? He was searching all around Billy’s place for something. And, he has just been a bit off since his introduction. Could David have been merely in the wrong place at the wrong time with Shane the real target?

Then there is Luna. Why didn’t she just come clean with her mom and Joanna? They could have helped her before the sh*t hit the fan with her getting arrested on suspicion of David’s murder. To make matters even sourer for Luna, Molly hasn’t been the best girlfriend in the world, and after Luna made her one phone call from the Millwood jail, Molly wasn’t there to answer her phone. Her leaving the city to rush to Luna’s side just might be a little too late.
The other problem is that Officer Mercer is not experienced enough to lead this investigation. Owen knows it. Joanna knows it. Even the mayor of Millwood knows it. She said as much to Mercer when she warned that the RCMP were being called in. Why can’t she just go over his head and force him out, getting someone into that small town that can get this investigation done right?
Most important of all, how are Billy and Joanna going to prove that Luna wasn’t the true culprit. They have her DNA, found under David’s fingernails. She lied to the police about what really happened. And, despite Joanna deleting that voice mail message, there was digital prove that she was VERY angry at her biological father, warning that he needed to pay.
