Nelson’s mother found her body the bathtub of her home in June of 2015. An autopsy showed she had been sexually assaulted and strangled.
Investigators linked DNA evidence to Kidder, who was a friend of the family.
Matthew Kidder was found guilty of first-degree murder in her death in September.
Nelson’s family members attended the hearing, and said Kidder showed no emotion in court today. They said he even refused to stand when the district judge walked in.

Now, the family hopes they can finally put him, and this case, behind them.
“I’m satisfied if he never sees the outside of a prison, I’d be even more satisfied if he doesn’t live long enough to serve that sentence,” said Jessica’s father Harry Nelson.
Nelson and dozens of Jessica’s family members and friends gathered outside the Douglas County District courtroom Wednesday after a judge sentenced Kidder to life in prison for first degree murder.
“I hope every day is a living hell for him,” Harry Nelson said.
“She is our daughter no matter what, from now until we meet her again, so the only difference is she’s not here, and he’s the reason for that,” Nelson said.
Prosecutors credit strong DNA, cell phone and computer evidence for the jury’s guilty verdict back in September.

“Jessica fought with every fiber in her body, so we had the DNA under her fingernails and on the phone cord,” said prosecutor Brenda Beadle.
Nelson’s parents Harry and Melissa say they are satisfied with the sentence. But say it’sstill impossible to understand how Kidder, a family friend, could do what he was found guilty of – even attending Nelson’s funeral and memorial.
“We practically raised him as well as they did. Just betrayal. Felt nothing but betrayed throughout the whole thing,” Harry said.
Now the Nelsons say they’re focused on carrying on Jessica’s spirit, and raising her son.
“We’ll just have to do the best we can to help her son live his life and make sure he knows who she was,” Harry said.
Kidder is not eligible for parole – so he truly will spend the rest of his life in prison.
