The brother of murder victim Rachael Anderson testified Wednesday that he initially suspected that her killer was the friend who had found her body in her East Side apartment.

John Anderson, 20, confirmed that he told a Columbus police detective that Jonathan Kennedy, who discovered the hogtied and raped woman in a bedroom closet of the apartment while doing a well-being check on Jan. 29, 2018, could have been responsible for her death.

The testimony came during cross-examination by defense attorney Isabella Dixon on the second day of the death-penalty trial of Anthony J. Pardon in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Pardon, 55, is charged with aggravated murder, rape, kidnapping, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

Prosecutor Ron O‘Brien has told jurors that DNA and cellphone evidence will prove Pardon guilty of Anderson‘s rape and murder. A rape kit conducted on the victim turned up no DNA other than Pardon‘s, he said.

Kennedy, who had known Anderson since they were teens in Warren in northeastern Ohio, gave emotional testimony Tuesday about finding her body.

Kennedy and his wife were among the only people Anderson knew in Columbus when she moved to the city in May 2017 for an internship at Shaw-Davis Funeral Homes. They also were the only ones with a spare key to her apartment.

Co-workers and friends became concerned when Anderson didn‘t show up for work or answer her phone on the morning after her 24th birthday.

John Anderson testified that he had driven to Columbus the previous Friday to stay with his sister and celebrate her birthday at a party that Kennedy and his wife hosted on Saturday, the night before her birthday.

He inadvertently took her apartment key when he drove back to Warren on May 28, 2018, so his sister went to the Kennedys‘ West Side apartment that evening to pick up the spare. Investigators think that she was attacked by Pardon after returning to her apartment.

John Anderson testified that his sister told him, in a conversation about two weeks before her birthday, that she had become uncomfortable around Jonathan Kennedy, worried that he had developed “a sexual vibe” for her.

Under “re-direct” questioning from Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer Rausch, he said he observed nothing but normal, friendly interaction between his sister and the Kennedys during the birthday weekend.

John Anderson also said that he mentioned other possible suspects to police, including an ex-boyfriend of his sister‘s, and a man his sister had complained about in her apartment complex.

The remainder of the day consisted entirely of testimony from a crime-scene special agent from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The prosecution led him through a methodical review of crime-scene photos and all the physical evidence collected during the investigation.
