Who Looks Good In Black

If your go-to emergency outfit formula is head-to-toe noir, like mine is, it may be time to reconsider-a story in yesterday’s Daily Mail says that only one in five women actually has the correct skin tone to wear black well.

According to a team of color experts corralled by the newspaper, wearing black has the ability to severely age a woman’s face. “Black clothing can highlight dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes and wrinkles on the face,” the article says. “And it can even make those who wear it appear to have dark ‘spokes’, or fissures, in the iris. Wrinkles and sunken areas appear deeper and more pronounced, meaning the effect is more prominent in older women.”

And here’s the test they suggest to find out if you’re the one lucky lady out of five who can actually make black work: “Hold the color up against your face, stand in front of the mirror and look for dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes or lines on the face that are highlighted. If there are no dark areas or shadows, you can probably wear black close to your face and look great.”

Well. Considering I’m a through-and-through New Yorker and black is practically a standard-issue uniform here, and I just got back from 10 days vacation where I indulged in every piece of peanut brittle and Pina Colada that passed my way and could use a little sveltifying in the wardrobe department, and at least 50% of my would-save-them-in-a-fire designer pieces are some form of black, I’m not giving up my favorite color any time soon (even though I tried out the test and my olive skin looked hopelessly sallow and the bags under my eyes could carry groceries). How about you ladies? Does black’s slimming properties prevent you from caring too much about this news? Or do you try and wear as much color as possible to keep your skin’s glow? Are you one of the few who can actually pull this hue off? Or do you think this whole story is just kinda silly? Discuss!

Oh and hey, don’t worry dolls…we know the one color that flatters EVERY woman’s skin tone!
