Who Makes Berkley Jensen Batteries

Is two always better than one?

Determining which lasts longer. One 3 volt battery or two 1.5 volt batteries.

By: Daniel Cohen

Abstract:

In urgent times quick decisions must be made. One might think that using two AA 1.5 volt batteries will work just as good as one 3 volt battery. To see if this would work I conducted an experiment. I got identical light bulbs and used one 3 volt battery to power one bulb and two AA 1.5 volt batteries to power the other bulb. The two 1.5 volt batteries ended up running out before the one 3 volt battery, but to a greater extent than I imagined. This great difference between the two life spans could be attributed to the AA batteries being cheap or that a single celled 3 volt battery is a lot better than two AA 1.5 volt batteries.

Introduction:

One day you may just find yourself in the predicament of not having a 3 volt battery when you urgently need one, but you do have two double A batteries each packing 1.5 volts. Two AA 1.5 volt batteries add up to the same amount of voltage as one 3 volt battery. Therefore shouldn’t these two batteries be a perfect substitute for the one battery you lack? Many would say yes. I however on the contrary believe them to not be the perfect substitute. Batteries are made up of cells. The more cells there are the more room for error. The cells are more likely to leak or overheat; taking away from the performance of the battery. The 3 volt battery in question is single celled while the AA batteries have multiple cells. So the two 1.5 volt batteries should be drained of power before the one 3 volt battery.

    Methods:

To determine whether my hypothesis was correct or not, two AA 1.5 volt batteries and one 3 volt battery were obtained as well as two identical light bulbs. One light bulb was attached to the two AA 1.5 volt batteries using wires. Then the other was attached to the 3 volt battery. After everything was set I waited to see which would stop lighting the bulb first.

    Results:

The two AA 1.5 volt batteries failed before the 3 volt battery. The AA batteries stopped working after approximately 4 hours of usage. Data for how long the single celled 3 volt battery lasted was not collected because the experiment was done to see which of the batteries would drain the quickest . Therefore once the AA batteries were finished the experiment was over.

    Discussion:

Although the data collected proved my hypothesis to be correct, the results were still shocking. I didn’t expect the AA batteries to drain so quickly. I searched up these AA batteries online to see how they performed against other AA batteries such as Duracell and Energizer and they didn’t fair too well. The Berkley Jensen branded batteries received terrible reviews on amazon regardless of being AA, AAA, etc; they were all bad. Had I got a more reliable brand of battery such as Duracell or Energizer the results could’ve been closer. However research done online still suggests that the single celled 3 volt battery would’ve lasted longer even against reliable AA batteries. Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 11.34.06 PM.png

    Conclusion:

The purpose of this experiment was to see if a hypothetical problem that could be encountered one day could be fixed with alternate sources. It’s logical to think that two 1.5 volt batteries would work as well as one 3 volt battery because 1.5 + 1.5 = 3. That would work if this was a perfect world and other variables were not always getting in the way. However this is a complex world where many factors come into account in many situations. This situation happens to be the amount of cells affecting the performance of a battery. The more cells there are in the battery the higher risk there is of there being loss of power and malfunctions along the way. Like with anything, the more components there are, the probability of something going wrong is greater.
