The Untold Story of Rough Rider Knives

The Rough Riders, known as the 1st United States Volunteer Calvary, were legendary figures in the Spanish-American War. Led by Theodore Roosevelt, this diverse group of men from all walks of life achieved fame through their bravery and valor in battles such as Las Guasimas, San Juan Hill, and the Siege of Santiago.

Volunteers from Every Background

At the start of the war, three volunteer units were formed to bolster the depleted American military. These units consisted of individuals from various backgrounds, including cowboys, miners, hunters, Native Americans, gamblers, and college students. They all volunteered to join Colonel Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt, united in their determination to fight for their country.

Equipped for Battle

Before being deployed to Cuba, the Rough Riders underwent rigorous training and prepared their equipment. Roosevelt utilized his political influence to ensure that the Rough Riders were well-equipped. Armed with bowie knives, Colt .45 Revolvers, and Krag-Jorgensen carbine rifles, the men received the same basic training as other regiments in the army, making them as prepared as possible for the upcoming battles.

The Battle of Las Guasimas

One of the first major battles for the Rough Riders in Cuba was the Battle of Las Guasimas. Positioned on the road to Santiago, Las Guasimas held strategic importance. Led by Wood and Roosevelt, the Rough Riders, along with the regular army, successfully held the road. Remarkably, they suffered only 8 casualties, with 31 wounded. This uphill battle against a fortified enemy laid the foundation for the American victory in the war.

Charging San Juan Hill

Roosevelt played a pivotal role in the Battle of San Juan Hill by leading the charge on Kettle Hill. The objective of the Rough Riders and the infantry was to divert the attention of the Spanish army and create an opportunity for the artillery bombardment to be more effective. The Rough Riders stormed up Kettle Hill while their Gatling Guns provided cover fire, relentlessly pinning down the Spanish forces. After capturing Kettle Hill, the Rough Riders successfully repelled Spanish attempts to retake the position, once again aided by their Gatling guns.

The Siege of Santiago

The Siege of Santiago marked the turning point of the Spanish-American War, and the Rough Riders were an integral part of this historical event. They courageously held off the Spanish forces while the US Navy relentlessly bombarded the city and sank the Spanish ships in the harbor.

A Legacy of Bravery

The Rough Riders, under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt, played a pivotal role in defeating the Spanish and securing victory in the war. This group of volunteer soldiers proved themselves to be highly effective warriors, fighting alongside regular military forces to push back the Spanish in Cuba. Their legacy embodies the true spirit of America and its unwavering willingness to contribute when needed.
