Who Makes Spectrum Paint

Are you looking to spruce up your dining room walls, add some flare to the bookshelf in your playroom, or perhaps add an accent wall to your powder bath? Well, then you should reach out to Spectrum Paint, the largest independent paint company in the United States and headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma!

Tulsa

Tell us the story of Spectrum Paint. How did it begin? My dad, Travis Detter, started Spectrum Paint in 1986. The paint company (a one store operation in Tulsa) that he worked for went out of business. With the support of his father (my grandfather), which was a few thousand dollars and an old delivery truck, my dad started selling coatings out of a mini-storage building.

What is unique about Spectrum Paint? Many independent-owned paint companies in the US have 1 or 2 locations. We are headquartered in Tulsa and are the largest independent paint company in the United States. Last reporting had us at the 5th largest paint company with stores in the US (the others being Sherwin Williams, PPG, Kelly Moore, Dunn Edwards). We have 18 stores in Oklahoma and over 100 in 12 states. If you go to national chain paint stores, you will find the brand of paint that they manufacture/sell only. At our stores (and other independents), you will find multiple brands. Benjamin Moore, PPG, our own Spectrum Paint brand, Rustoleum, and more. Customers have options. Options paired with great customer service and the flexibility and response-times of an independent-owned company make what we call #TheSpectrumDifference.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Customers that buy our paint every single day (professional users of paint and coatings) rely on our team to make their businesses successful. It’s rewarding to see our customers succeed and getting to be a part of that success. It’s also rewarding to give back with paint donations for local organizations, community murals, and more. Paint can truly make such a difference!

What is the most challenging part of your job? We couldn’t have grown without having lots of great employees and several that have been with us for over 20 years. Keeping our culture intact and a steady flow of talent coming is something we are constantly challenged with.

What is your favorite thing about Tulsa? I love that Tulsa has the amenities of a big city, but the charm and community-mindedness of a small town.

What products do you offer to your clients? We sell paint and coatings to homeowners/do-it-yourselfers and painting contractors for residential projects, to professionals painting/coating large commercial projects, and industrial coatings for multiple professionals, including manufacturing. Pretty much any type of coating other than automotive.

How did you discover your passion for this kind of business? Growing up, my mom was a nurse (she spent many decades with St. John Hospital), and I spent a lot of time with my dad at the paint store. I love everything about it and love seeing my dad hard at work. I used to stamp our logo and address on the brochures that our suppliers provided us. I’ve done a little bit of everything at the stores over the years and after graduating with a communications degree from ORU, I came on full time to do marketing. That was 16 years ago and we had 15 stores at that time. It has been a huge honor and blessing to be a part of the growth over the years!
