Yes, this carbine length Hybrid barrel by Criterion wears a number of hats, applications-wise, but it wears them all surprisingly well.

Foreseeable Drawbacks: Criterion has a reputation for making accurate, highly performative gun products and accessories, this carbine barrel is priced to reflect that, which may not suit every operator’s budget. While the Hybrid barrel has both precision and tactical capabilities, it’s not the best option for close-quarters combat home defense due to its standard 16” barrel, which makes tight spaces and corners more of a chore.

The Hybrid Carbine Barrel has a lightweight frame, but it’s weightier than other comparable barrels, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The extra heft, however, will take some getting used to and may cause handling issues for some marksmen. Foreseeable Drawbacks: Spiral-fluted AR barrels are usually more costly than barrels without such specialty, weight saving features. Even though the Alpha barrel is fluted, the weight of the barrel may take some getting used to at first. To curb this issue, we kept taking it for a walk at the range. After a while, muscle memory kicked in and handling became easier, so just keep at it.

While fluting aids in heat dispensation, the lack of mass on a fluted barrel will eventually heat up, especially during sustained auto fire scenarios, so be sure to pack tactical gloves to mitigate this common handling issue.

In fact, we were able to consistently hit our targets at 25-yds.

We also utilized a flash hider and a suppressor on the NEMO’s threaded barrel at different intervals to mitigate the considerable volume of muzzle flash. Sure, it’s clear that this lightweight pistol barrel won’t be winning any medals for precision shooting anytime soon, and that’s okay. The NEMO 7.5” AR barrel is far better suited for an “up close and personal” approach anyway.

Foreseeable Drawbacks: Due to government regulations, AR pistols require a government-issued tax stamp and a lengthy mandatory waiting period, which may not sit well with some gun owners, causing them to explore other options.

With shorter barrels, greater muzzle flash can be an issue, which can impair one’s vision, use protective eyewear and attach a suppressor or flash hider to mitigate blurred vision. SBRs also cycle ammunition faster, which means faster wear on components and more grime and carbon buildup in the BCG, so be vigilant to regularly maintain your barrel and give it the care it needs.
