FLIPPIN — It’s a secret no longer: Startup boat manufacturer Vexus Boats was unveiled Friday by Keith Daffron, the oldest grandson of legendary boat builder Forrest L. Wood.
“Vexus. We’ve waited a long time to say that out loud,” Daffron said at the brand’s unveiling. “It’s been a whisper for a few months now.”

Daffron and the Vexus Boats management team made the announcement Friday morning in front of a crowd of several hundred at the Forrest L. Wood Outdoor Sports Gallery.
Following the announcement, Vexus Boats employees participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the construction site of the company’s manufacturing facility.
Forrest Wood, along with his wife Nina, founded Ranger Boats in Flippin in 1968. The Woods sold Ranger Boats in 1987, and the company is now owned by outdoor supply retailer Bass Pro Shop.
“When you come in here, the walls have a way of talking to your soul about what it means to be a great business in our industry, what it means to build the best product and take care of the customer,” Daffron said, referring to the Forrest L. Wood memorabilia on display at the Outdoor Sports Gallery. “Make no mistake — if you hear nothing else I say today — understand that it’s their legacy that we intend to carry on.
“In a world full of corporate boardrooms, a lot of noise and people that may not know their customers near as well as they should, it’s our job to preserve that legacy and carry it forward.”
Vexus Boats will focus on fiberglass and aluminum outboard-powered, trailer-able fishing boats.

“That’s a mouthful, but look at it this way: If you hang a motor on it and you fish out of it, that’s probably where we’re going to be at some point in time,” Daffron said.
Vexus Boats plans to make its official product introduction at the Bassmaster Classic in Greenville, S.C. in May. It is currently building a factory in Flippin, while conducting research and development at a facility in Cotter.
Vexus Boats’ planned factory will be built in stages, allowing the manufacturer to expand as demand warrants it. The initial facility is about 23,000 square feet, with a footprint to expand up to 115,000 square feet.
“We’re going to be super busy between now and May, but we have the team to do it,” Daffron said.
The number of Vexus Boats employees presently numbers in the teens, but that number will swell into the hundreds once the factory is opened.
“I’m just humbled and excited to be a witness to this,” Flippin Mayor Gerald Marberry said. “We’ve had some tough months recently with the news of Orscheln Farm and Home leaving town. Something like Vexus Boats will be good for the city.”
Danny Games, executive vice president of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, lauded Vexus Boats on Friday.
“You are doing exactly what we want to see in the state,” Games said. “We look forward to touring your name across the state and the globe.”

Daffron said that he wants Vexus Boats to be known for their innovation and top-line quality.
“We know that talk is cheap,” he said. “That’s what I like about our team, they don’t spend a lot of time talking. They speak with their results, with what they produce and how they produce it.”
