Bob Marley was a legendary musician from Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Colony of Jamaica. He lived from 1945 to 1981. He died from acral lentiginous melanoma and was given a state funeral. Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Limited is responsible for the rights to the late performer Bob Marley’s image, likeness, and name. In 1996, it obtained a federal trademark registration for “ONE LOVE” for footwear. Later the company also obtained a federal trademark registration for “ONE LOVE” for bibs for toddlers and clothing items like hats and tank tops. Additionally, in 2015, it obtained a federal trademark registration for “ONE LOVE” for live performances, cultural festivals, and websites about these subjects.

The company also obtained a federal trademark registration for “BOB MARLEY” for incense, novelty license plates, plastic cases for beepers, jewelry like watches and medallions, greeting cards, trading cards, bookmarks and other similar paper goods, tote bags, book bags and fanny packs, mugs, textile wall hangings, t-shirts, jackets, hats and similar clothing items, as well as for ornamental cloth patches and smoking pipes.

Additionally, Fifty-Six Hope Road Music obtained a federal trademark registration for “BOB MARLEY” for use with musical recordings, ringtones, and digital music, for fruit and milk-based beverages, for coffee, coffee beans, and coffee-based drinks, for fruit drinks, herbal juices and lemonade, and later for cell phone accessories, for guitar and musical instrument accessories, for live performances, cultural festivals and websites about these subjects and in 2019 for cigarette rolling papers and lighters for smokers. It also filed a trademark application for “BOB MARLEY” for smoking accessories including vaporizers, smokeless ashtrays, and e-cigarettes.

In 2022 the company filed a trademark application for “BOB MARLEY” for NFTs containing music and for NFTs containing images.

Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Limited obtained a federal trademark registration for “MARLEY” for shirts and headwear in 2013, as well as for headphones, speakers, and downloadable music, for a website featuring an artist’s performances, and for a full line of clothing including headwear in 2016.

Marley’s holding company also obtained a federal trademark registration for “MARLEY COFFEE” for coffee cups and mugs, for clothing like aprons, shirts, and sweatshirts, for coffee and coffee-based beverages, for retail store services featuring coffee and associated items, and for coffee roasting and processing. In 2019 Fifty-Six Hope Road filed a trademark application for “MARLEY COFFEE” for restaurant and cafe services and for shirts, aprons, sweatshirts, and headwear. Additionally, it obtained a federal trademark registration for “ONE DROP” for prepared coffee and coffee-based beverages.

Bob Marley founded a record label called Tuff Gong International. His son, Ziggy Marley, updated the name to Tuff Gong Worldwide, which is distributed by Universal Music. In 2012, Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Limited obtained a federal trademark registration for “TUFF GONG WORLDWIDE” as well as for a logo featuring the words “TUFF GONG WORLDWIDE” for fiction books and children’s stories, for bags, backpacks, and wallets, for hats and sweatshirts and for DVDs featuring music and musical performances ad for t-shirts. In 2019, the company also obtained a federal trademark registration for the “TUFF GONG PICTURES” logo for use with DVDs of short and feature films and for film production.

Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Limited obtained a federal trademark registration in 2012 for an abstract logo with and without the name “MARLEY” for headphones, speakers, downloadable music, and for entertainment services centered around a website. Additionally, the company obtained a federal trademark registration for “REBEL” headphones and portable music players and other similar items. In 2022, it also obtained a federal trademark registration for “HOUSE OF MARLEY” for earbuds and speakers, as well as watches and backpacks.

Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Limited obtained a federal trademark registration for “ROOTS ROCK REGGAE” for t-shirts, hats and caps in 2008, for “BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS” for bags in 2010, and for “THREE LITTLE BIRDS” for t-shirts in 2014. In 2015, the company also obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo featuring the word “M MARLEY” for a selection of clothing items.
