Who Owns Cadia Healthcare

A new residential healthcare provider has moved into a facility north of Hagerstown, and its administrator says the staff will work hard to win the community’s confidence.

Delaware-based Cadia Healthcare was licensed on June 13 to operate in the facility formerly run by NMS Healthcare at 14014 Marsh Pike, according to Cadia Administrator Rene Gomez. The facility is “partially open” now, he told Herald-Mail Media on Wednesday, and has accepted its first patient.

Gomez said the company has renovated part of the building, making 75 beds available. After further renovations to an older portion, the facility will have 206 beds. Those renovations should be completed in six months to a year, he said.

“We had a meeting with Meritus (Health) on Friday and shared what we want to accomplish,” Gomez said.

One thing on the list is to make sure the community understands that “we are not related to NMS,” he said. Gomez stressed that “we’re going to work hard to change the perception” of the facility under NMS management.

NMS Healthcare closed the skilled-nursing facility last summer after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services found it to be out of compliance.

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh filed suit against the parent company, Neiswanger Management Services LLC, late last year, accusing the company of “patient dumping” and submitting false claims to the state. That suit is pending, although NMS sought to have the case dismissed.

The Maryland Court of Appeals ruled in February that the case could go forward.

Cadia has taken over all five NMS facilities operating in Maryland, Gomez said. The others are in Annapolis, Hyattsville, Springbrook and Wheaton.

A news release from Cadia said the company is completing a “major multimillion-dollar renovation to make the space more inviting and home-like for the Hagerstown community. Significant upgrades were also made to ensure the facility’s comfort and safety.”

Gomez said some renovations are being made to meet new certification requirements.

Cadia Hagerstown will offer short- and long-term skilled nursing services, as well as ventilator and pulmonary care services.

The company will have a registered nurse and a geriatric nursing assistant on every shift, he added. As the number of beds grows, more staff will be added. “We’re doing the best we can to filter through the people we’re hiring,” he said. “Our standards are high.”

In addition to the five Maryland facilities, Cadia operates five in Delaware. “Four of them are five-star,” Gomez said.

Tours of the facility are available.

“Cadia has provided quality rehabilitation, skilled nursing and long-term care services to the residents of Delaware, Maryland and neighboring Pennsylvania communities for over 20 years,” owner and managing partner Stephen Silver said in a statement. “We are pleased to be bringing our brand of high-quality, compassionate and innovative care to Hagerstown.”

“We look forward to showing our commitment to quality nursing care to the Hagerstown community,” Chief Operating Officer Craig Robinson said.
