Living inland, as I do, sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the day to day and lose sight of the fact that we really don’t reside that far from stunning water views.

It was this revelation that prompted me to visit the iconic Dolphin Bar & Shrimp House for a leisurely late lunch.

Located directly on the Intercoastal Waterway, the restaurant boasts sweeping panoramic views. As it was high season, we had a bit of a wait to dine on the covered outdoor deck, but the breeze and the ambiance were well worth it.

The seafood sampler included steamed shrimp, smoked dolphin dip, and crab claws garnished with water crackers, cocktail and horseradish sauces.

We were promptly greeted by our pleasant server, Tiana. She suggested a few appetizers to start and we went with the very shareable seafood sampler ($15). The plate consisted of steamed shrimp, smoked dolphin dip, and blue crab claws accompanied by water crackers, horseradish and cocktail sauces. The shrimp could have been chilled a bit more, the crab claws didn’t have that fresh, sweet taste I was hoping for, but the dolphin dip was excellent.

My main course of Southern Style Shrimp and Grits($18) was incredibly flavorful. A 1/2 dozen Cajun spiced shrimp were sauteed with diced peppers, onions, and bacon set atop a mound of rich, creamy gouda grits. The dish was complemented by a wedge of custardy sweet griddled cornbread which balanced the heat.

It was no surprise to me that my husband went for Fred’s incredible meatloaf sandwich ($11). Fashioned from an old family recipe, the meat was finely ground and well seasoned. The nicely seared slice was topped with Provolone cheese, fried onion straws and horseradish sauce, all served on a scrumptious toasted brioche bun. The sandwich came with a choice of a side item and my husband choose an additional stack of fried onion straws which were tasty, but not very crispy or golden brown as one would expect.

We shared the orange sunset cake ($9) for dessert. Made with fresh squeezed orange juice and sumptuously sweet orange custard, the cake was rich and moist, perfect for those with an insatiable sweet tooth.

The orange sunset cake is a popular sweet treat.

The Dolphin Bar & Shrimp House has a rich history. Formerly The Outrigger, owned by the late radio/movie star and south Florida socialite Frances Langford, the property was frequented by Hollywood royalty, including Jackie Gleason and Bob Hope. One could spend hours marveling at the memorabilia found at the eatery.

The site was renovated and reopened by the Frederick Ayers family in the year 2000 and remains one of the most popular restaurants in our little piece of paradise.
