Locally based Drive & Shine recently took a step outside the northern Indiana market by opening its first facility in Kalamazoo on Nov. 22.
The new location is patterned after Drive & Shine’s newest South Bend location at 4035 S. Michigan St. in that it includes a belt-driven wash, outside vacuums and an indoor area where customers can make use of vacuums, mat cleaners and air hoses for detailing.

The new service has proven to be popular in South Bend as it allows unlimited Gold and Ruby wash customers to clean up their vehicles in a bright, climate-controlled environment for free.
But since it’s Drive & Shine’s first location in Kalamazoo, it also offers the company’s full array of lube services and checks that typically can be completed in 20 minutes or less — including the complimentary wash — without customers ever leaving their vehicles.
“We’ve been looking for opportunities for growth,” said Sherry Tehrani, vice president of marketing at the family-owned business. “We felt Kalamazoo had a similar feel to the South Bend market and it’s only about an hour away.”

It also helped that the Kalamazoo market didn’t have the combination or the level of services that are offered by Drive & Shine, said Matthew Tehrani, director of equipment and chemistry for the business.
The company invested about $10 million building the new wash at 4201 W. Main St. in Kalamazoo, and it has plans for additional expansion in that area with a second location opening at 449 W. Kilgore Road in Portage, Mich., in the second half of next year, and a third location to follow in the future.
Drive & Shine intends to offer its full array of services in the Kalamazoo market, meaning one of the upcoming locations will also offer a wide variety of interior and exterior detailing services that can be found at full-service locations.
The business hired about 20 people for the new wash, but two employees from the Michiana market transferred to the new location to serve as manager of lube and wash services, said Sherry Tehrani.
“It’s creating opportunities for everyone,” she explained, adding that the business is continuing to expand even as it completed the new wash in South Bend and expanded the main store in Mishawaka over the past year.
Founded about 22 years ago by Haji Tehrani, who had a passion for cars and a desire to start his own business, Drive & Shine now has nearly 150 employees working at locations in South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Schererville, Ind., and now Kalamazoo.

Since it aims to distinguish itself by offering the highest level services and customer experience, it provides starting wages of $12 an hour as well as training and growth opportunities so that employees can build a career within the business.
