It’s harvest time, in more ways than one, at Joe’s Produce Gourmet Market in Livonia. The specialty grocery, which began as a humble farmer’s roadside fruit stand in 1945, is now unveiling its remodeled bakery, Art of Bread by Joe’s. The bakery, located just a few doors east of the main store in the strip mall on Seven Mile east of Farmington Road, has undergone a major transformation. The grand opening, led by Mayor Dennis Wright and owner Joe Maiorana Jr., is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday.

The entire plaza has undergone a facelift, with the addition of outdoor lighting, awnings, greenery, and a pergola for al fresco dining just outside the bakery. This upgrade is a testament to the market’s success and growth. In 2007, Joe’s Produce expanded, and in 2012, they added two more stores nearby, Art of Bread and Joe’s Meat and Seafood.

On Saturday, the second part of the harvest begins as Joe’s hosts its Michigan Taste Fest. This event celebrates Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and food products. Joe Maiorana Jr. explains that with the arrival of Michigan produce, “we would start it now and welcome in the best of Michigan produce.” The Taste Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, offering samples of delicious local fare throughout the store.
The Michigan produce showcased at the festival will include sweet corn, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, green peppers, melons, peaches, and possibly watermelon. In addition to the locally grown produce, there will be samples of produce from California and Washington, which are in their prime during the summer season.
The Taste Fest is not only a celebration of Michigan’s harvest but also a nod to Joe’s Produce Gourmet Market’s roots as a farm stand. The market’s origins can be traced back to Joe Maiorana Sr., who turned his father Gaspare’s fruit stand into a full-service market in 1967. Today, Joe Maiorana Jr. continues the family tradition, having taken over the business from his parents 20 years ago.

This event is a testament to Joe’s Produce Gourmet Market’s commitment to supporting local farmers and producers while providing the community with high-quality, fresh food. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience the best of Michigan’s harvest!
