DAYTONA BEACH — Despite the recent unwelcome presence of Hurricane Irma, construction remains on schedule to open two highly anticipated side-by-side oceanfront restaurants in January, according to officials involved in the project.

Roof trusses arrived this week on the construction site for the Jimmy Buffett-branded Landshark Bar & Grill and an adjacent, separately owned Tex-Mex eatery called Cocina 214 Restaurant & Bar.

The two restaurants are being built on the six-acre lot at 451 S. Atlantic Ave., just north of Sunsplash Park and Volusia County lifeguard headquarters. Both are targeting a late January opening, in time for the Rolex 24 at Daytona at Daytona International Speedway.

Consolidated-Tomoka Land Co. is the landowner and developer of the $6 million dual-restaurant project.

Irma didn’t result in any disruption of the construction, Consolidated-Tomoka CEO John Albright said on Tuesday. “Not anything significant,” Albright said. “We’re still on schedule for an opening in January.”

Scott Bullock, Consolidated-Tomoka’s vice president of real estate, added that the roofs on both restaurants are expected to be finished by the end of October.

Cocina 214 is owned by a local investor group who opened their first and still sole location in Winter Park 6½ years ago. The Cocina 214 name refers to an area code for the Dallas, Texas area.

Lambrine Macejewski, business manager and partner for Cocina 214, could not be reached despite multiple attempts on Tuesday. Macejewski had told The News-Journal at the restaurants’ groundbreaking in July that she and her partners had settled on Daytona Beach after considering potential expansion sites in Tampa and South Florida.

Macejewski has said the 7,000-square-foot Cocina 214 will employ 75 workers and offer seating for 200 people. It will include an outdoor bar as well as a private indoor dining room for special events.

The Landshark Bar & Grill will be operated by Orlando-based IMCMV, licensee of the restaurant chain started by Buffett’s Margaritaville Holdings company. On Tuesday, that company’s president and CEO, David Crabtree, said that timelines were being refined for hiring an estimated 150 workers for the 6,600 square foot restaurant, designed for a capacity of 350 customers.

Rich Torella, formerly the culinary leader at the company’s Margaritaville restaurant in Destin, has been hired as the general manager at the Landshark in Daytona Beach, Crabtree said.

“We’ll hire the GM first and then about 60 days before opening, we’ll set up a job fair and start promoting open positions and start to fill them,” Crabtree said. “And then we’ll have everyone start about three weeks before the opening.”

By next week, there also will be a new “Coming Soon” sign on the property to pique the interest of passing motorists, Crabtree said. The Daytona Beach Landshark will be a prototype of an updated design for the brand known for a tropical vibe that includes beach volleyball areas, fire pits and colorful entertainment, he said.

“The new elements will be reflected in a little more concentration on the kitchen and the menu offerings, while still having the great atmosphere out front, with the music, the entertainment and the merchandise,” Crabtree said. “We’re really excited to bring a Landshark to Daytona Beach.”
