Authority Brands recently acquired Monster Tree Service, a transaction that technically only took 90 days to complete, said Rob Weddle, CEO of Authority Brands. Monster Tree Service was founded in 2008 and provides tree care services such as trimming, pruning, tree removal and land and lot clearing.
Weddle said his vision two years ago was for Columbia, Maryland-based Authority Brands to become the leading franchisor of home services, and this deal “reinforces we’re on the right path,” marking the eighth brand in its home service portfolio.

“In addition to having strong unit economics and being a category leader, Monster Tree Service diversifies Authority Brands’ offerings, allowing us to satisfy the needs of more consumers nationwide,” Weddle said. “They are the only tree care franchise offering local certified arborist teams in locations across the country and have an extensive list of environmentally-friendly services that appeal to today’s consumer.”
Though Weddle said the deal took about three months, he met Josh Skolnick, the founder and CEO of Monster Tree Service, four years prior.
“I quickly took note of Monster Tree Service’s potential and continued following Josh’s progress as he grew the company to more than 200 territories across the country,” Weddle said. “When presented with the opportunity to acquire Monster Tree Service, we didn’t hesitate as we saw how strong of an addition the brand would be in our home service portfolio. Josh and I have similar values and are dedicated in providing franchisees with all of the resources they need to succeed, so this was a great match for both.”

This deal, supported by Apax Partners, also marks Authority’s sixth acquisition since October 2018. Weddle noted Monster Tree Service employees will be kept on, as they strive to acquire “well-run companies and we value the expertise those employees bring to the business.”
Additional brands in Authority’s portfolio include The Cleaning Authority, Homewatch CareGivers, America’s Swimming Pool Company, Mosquito Squad, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, Mister Sparky and One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning. Together, these brands provide home services in more than 1,875 territories operated by nearly 1,000 franchise owners in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Kenya and Indonesia.
Boxwood Partners represented Monster Tree Service and acted as their financial advisors for the transaction.
