Who Pays For The Renovations On Instant Dream Home

Overall, what did you learn about yourself as a designer from doing this show?

I always knew that I love details, but I had to come to grips with the fact that on projects with tight and strict deadlines, every detail that I’m obsessing over won’t make it, and that’s okay.

Is there any concern about the design elements (like the prefab kitchen) not holding up over time?

There is a perception that prefabricated designs are not as safe as traditionally constructed designs, and this simply isn’t true. In the instance of a prefab kitchen, they are constructed in controlled environments using equipment specifically designed to reinforce its structure for long-term usage. The quality of materials used in building will also play a big role in how well it can withstand general wear and tear. I highly doubt any of the families we worked with will have any problems.

Was the paint dry when people walked into their renovated homes?

This is a great question! Yes, the paint was dry by the time people came home to the great surprise of their homes being renovated. It was close in a few instances, but we got that part done.

What would your reaction be if your husband did this at your home?

I think I’m rather hard to surprise. I always want to know what’s going on, but once a surprise is sprung on me, I’m grateful. I happen to be married to a really talented man with amazing taste. If Jason decided to surprise me with a renovated home, I’d be thrilled.

You and your husband have become fathers since we interviewed you about Styling Hollywood. How has having a child changed your lives and how did fatherhood help you design for this show?

It sounds so cliché but becoming fathers has been the greatest gift to Jason and me. We both love work and fortunately, there’s plenty of it for each of us but since having [our son] Arrow we find ourselves home more often. Arrow turned one in June and he’s doing everything from walking to opening doors and trying on all the hats and sunglasses in our closet. I definitely made a bunch of decisions based on learnings from being a father, case in point, not putting shelves above the crib in the first episode.
