ORLANDO, Fla. —

Iowa learned its bowl game destination and opponent Sunday, one day after the Hawkeyes lost to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship Game.

The Hawkeyes will head to the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl to take on Tennessee.

What to know about the Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee is 8-4 this year and went 4-4 in SEC play. The Vols had high hopes entering 2023 after going 11-2 last season and winning the Orange Bowl vs. Clemson, 31-14, but they took a small step back this year.

Iowa and Tennessee have met three times before, but only once since the 1980s. Tennessee won 45-28 in the TaxSlayer Bowl after the 2014 season.

Iowa history in the Citrus Bowl

This is a familiar bowl game for many Hawkeye fans.

The Hawkeyes played in the Citrus Bowl just two years ago, losing 20-17 to Kentucky. The game was also known as the Capital One Bowl from 2003-14, including the famous game on Jan. 1, 2005, when Drew Tate and Warren Holloway connected for a miraculous touchdown as time expired to propel the Hawkeyes over Nick Saban’s LSU team, 30-25.

Here’s what the University of Iowa says about getting tickets to the game in Orlando:

“The Iowa Athletics Ticket Office will accept Citrus Bowl ticket requests from Monday, Dec. 4 through noon on Sunday, Dec. 10 from football season ticket holders, I-Club members, and University of Iowa Alumni. Fans are encouraged to monitor their email inbox for ordering information and visit Bowl Central for updated information. If tickets remain after the priority process, they will be made available for the public on Wednesday, Dec. 13.”

Top players

Iowa: LB Jay Higgins, third in the Bowl Subdivision by averaging 11.9 tackles per game, including 14 in the Big Ten title game loss to top-ranked Michigan.

Tennessee: QB Joe Milton III, 2,430 yards passing with 16 touchdowns to go with five rushing TDs.

Notable

Iowa: The Hawkeyes are ranked 130th out of 133 Bowl Subdivision teams in scoring offense at 16.6 points per game and last in total offense at 238.8 yards per game. Iowa failed to score more than 10 points four times and twice lost in shutouts.

Tennessee: Three of the Volunteers’ four losses came against teams ranked inside the top 10 of the AP Top 25 released Sunday: fifth-ranked and College Football Playoff-bound Alabama, sixth-ranked Georgia and ninth-ranked Missouri.

Rematch of 2015 Gator Bowl

Tennessee beat Iowa the last time the teams met, Jan. 2, 2015, in the Gator Bowl.

Bowl history

Iowa: This is Iowa’s 36th bowl appearance and third in the Citrus Bowl. The Hawkeyes had split the previous two trips there, beating LSU in 2005 and losing to Kentucky in 2022. Iowa has won four of its last five bowl games.

Tennessee: This is Tennessee’s 56th bowl appearance, including a win in the 2020 Gator Bowl that was later vacated due to NCAA sanctions. This is the Volunteers’ first trip to the Citrus Bowl since beating Michigan to cap the 2001 season with 11 wins, and the Vols have won four of their five previous appearances to this bowl game.
