History of the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl
The Citrus Bowl is an annual college football game held at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, organized by the non-profit group Florida Citrus Sports. It started as the Tangerine Bowl in 1947 and became the Florida Citrus Bowl in 1983.
Throughout the years, it had various sponsors, including Capital One, CompUSA, Ourhouse.com, Buffalo Wild Wings, Overton’s, and Vrbo. Recently, Kellogg’s, now Kellanova, became the title sponsor, and the game is officially known as the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
Typically played at 1 p.m. EST on New Year’s Day and broadcasted on ABC, the Citrus Bowl is considered one of the premier bowls. In years when January 1 is a Sunday, the game may be played on January 2 or December 31 to avoid NFL schedule conflicts.
With a payout of $8.55 million per team, it has one of the largest payouts among bowls outside the College Football Playoff. Since 1985, the game has consistently featured two Top 25 ranked teams.
