History of the Liberty Bowl
The Liberty Bowl has been an annual event since 1959, showcasing thrilling matchups in late December or early January. Initially played at Philadelphia Municipal Stadium, it later moved to Atlantic City Convention Hall in 1964, and since 1965, it has found its home at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee. The game’s scheduling sometimes resulted in skipped years, with no games in 2008 and 2015 but two games each in 2010 and 2016.
AutoZone has been the proud sponsor of the Liberty Bowl since 2004, leading to its current title, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Past sponsors include St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and AXA Financial. A. F. “Bud” Dudley, a former Villanova athletic director, founded the Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia, and its inaugural game in 1959 drew 38,000 fans to witness Penn State’s victory over Alabama.
The game moved to Atlantic City in 1964, featuring a unique indoor setup at Convention Hall, before finding its long-term home in Memphis, where it has become one of the oldest non-New Year’s Six bowls, played every college football season since 1959.
