Who Pushed Park Wonseok

Storyline with spoilers:

Ok Chan-mi (Shin Ye-eun) grew up at an orphanage at Busan. She had a twin brother whose birth name was Ok Chan-kyu, but changed to Park Won-seok (Kang Yul) when he was adopted. Chan-mi was still in contact with her brother regularly, so she could not believe that her brother would have committed suicide. She then transferred to her brother’s high school to investigate on her brother’s suicide, and found a video to show that Won-seok was pushed out of the windows to fall to his death. Chan-mi encountered Ji Soo-heon (Lomon), and accidentally learnt that Soo-heon had a brain tumor with only 6 months left to live. Initially, Chan-mi suspected that Soo-heon was Won-seok’s murderer. Just when Chan-mi was going to shoot Soo-heon with her self-made gun that she gifted Won-seok before, Chan-mi received a call from Won-seok’s phone. This call proved that Soo-heon was not the murderer.

However, Soo-heon also had his own secret. His older brother had also committed suicide after being bullied in school, causing his mother to be in ill health. Therefore, Soo-heon needed money to pay for his mother’s hospital bills. Soo-heon’s friend Tae So-yeon (Jung Soo-bin) suggested Soo-heon to teach the school bully Sa Jung-kyung (Jin Ho-eun) a lesson and would be paid a sum of money. Jung-kyung had previously sexually assaulted a female classmate but was not convicted, and had continued to torment the victim in school. The victim’s father then requested So-yeon to teach Jung-kyung a lesson to force him to transfer school. Soo-heon assaulted Jung-kyung at the school’s photography room, breaking his toe and forcing Jung-kyung to transfer school within the next few days. The whole school was delighted at the presence of a hero driving out the school bully. However, Jung-kyung made a police report, so police detective Jin So-jeong (Kim Joo-ryoung) had to find this hero, as well as re-investigating Won-seok’s suicide. Soo-heon recevied another job offer to teach a car mechanic a lesson. This car mechanic had stabbed his female classmate to death when the classmate rejected him, but only sentenced to a few years at juvenile rehabilitation center as he was still a juvenile. Instead of feeling remorse for his past crime, the car mechanic went to threaten the classmate’s mother to withdraw civil charges against him. Soo-heon only beat up the car mechanic, but the car mechanic was found dead the next morning. Soo-heon became a major suspect, but the police found a torn receipt left by the class president Gi Oh-sung (Chae Sang-woo).

Oh-sung was the son of the police chief Gi Wang-do (Jang Hyun-sung), and had been a model student in school. Little did people know he had another side of him. Won-seok was known as a school bully but was actually instigated by Oh-sung as Oh-sung found out that Won-seok was gay. He also tried to stop Chan-mi from investigating into Won-seok’s suicide, as well as tried to prove that Soo-heon was the hero who assaulted Jung-kyung. Oh-sung teamed up with Jung-kyung to set a trap for Soo-heon to reveal his identity, only to find Seok Jae-beom (Seo Ji-hoon) instead. Jae-beom and Chan-mi arrived at the site in the nick of time to inform Soo-heon that his mother had passed away at the hospital. Jae-beom had repeat his 3rd year at the high school as he was in coma for 6 months. He was told by his mother that he had jumped off the building to commit suicide, and the accident caused him to lose all his memory. As Jae-beom was helping Chan-mi in her investigation, Jae-beom realised that he seemed to be on good term with Won-seok, but had no memories with Won-seok. All the information about Jae-beom’s past had been fed by Oh-sung. Chan-mi and Soo-heon suspected Oh-sung was the murderer of Won-seok as his ringtone was the same as the one they heard when the murderer called. Yet, Oh-sung told Jae-beom and Chan-mi that Won-seok was the one who pushed Jae-beom down the building, insisting that they should not pursue further about Won-seok’s suicide. However, Chan-mi realised that Won-seok was with her at Busan when Jae-beom fell off the building.

Jae-beom had a twin brother who had passed away in the middle school. From time to time, Jae-beom had been doing things that he had no memory of him performing the activities. Jae-beom actually had split personality when his twin brother was his another persona who committed the murder including killing the car mechanics. Jae-beom (or his twin brother) was also the one who pushed Won-seok out of the windows after believing Oh-sung’s words that Won-seok was the one who pushed Jae-beom down the building. Jae-beom later recalled that Oh-sung was the one who pushed him down after Jae-beom threatened Oh-sung not to bully Won-seok anymore. Jae-beom was later arrested by the police for the murders he had committed. Soo-heon had previously requested Oh-sung’s stepsister Kuk Ji-hyeon (Lee Soo-min) to plant a tracker in Oh-sung’s bag. Angry at Ji-hyeon’s betrayal and animosity towards Soo-heon, Oh-sung brought both to the rooftop. The fight between Oh-sung and Soo-heon caused Oh-sung to lose his balance and fell off the rooftop to his death. The whole school then learnt that Soo-heon was the hero that everyone admired, and decided to protect Soo-heon from the police by providing the testimony that Oh-sung had fallen to his death himself. Soo-heon then left school to spend his remaining time doing what he wanted, as he could live as long as the brain tumor remained in a stable state, and also started dating Chan-mi.

Comments:

I always believe that violence should not be used to curb violence, and therefore I don’t really agree with Soo-heon’s method. However, the things the bullies did in this drama are really frustrating, and there seemed no ends to what the bullies were doing. Although we normally value determination or tenacity, encouraging people not to give up easily, I can’t say this will be a good traits for the bullies. Jung-kyung and Oh-sung, and even the car mechanics were so persistent to seek revenge on people who went against them, as well as making sure that they tormented their victims to the fullest. I can only say, especially for Oh-sung, that the bullies brought their own tragedies upon themselves. However, it was also vexing to watch that the stupid systems were not protecting the victims but also allowed the bullies to continue to mentally torture their victims, so it would not be a surprise that there were students who committed suicide to escape reality. Violence should not be used to curb violence, but when all the legit methods failed such that violence became the only solution, shouldn’t this be a trigger point to change the social system? Or has the society become so rotten that violence became the only solution?
