The 36-year-old nephew of Raymond “Benzino” Scott told investigators he was acting in self-defense when he unleashed a hail of gunfire on his uncle after the rap and reality TV star allegedly threatened to kill him in text messages and repeated the threat when he rolled up beside him during the funeral procession for the hip-hop artist’s mother.
Gai Scott told police his uncle Benzino yelled, “I’m going to kill you” after rolling down his window and flashing what Scott believed to be a silver gun at him as he drove on the Duxbury stretch of Route 3 on Saturday afternoon, according to court papers. Gai Scott was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing after his arraignment yesterday on a charge of armed assault with intent to murder.

Gai Scott, who had three guns “locked and loaded” in his Bentley — two of which he emptied — immediately admitted to being the shooter when police arrived on scene. Benzino, the former front man for the rap group Made Men, was hit in the arm and right shoulder.
“Gai Scott stated that he was in fear of this subject doing harm to him and his family,” reads a state police probable cause report filed in court. “Gai Scott went on to state that he had purchased a firearm two days prior for protection from this person. Gai Scott stated that on this day he was driving alone with his wife and daughter in a separate car because he feared he may be attacked.”

Jon Ciraulo, Gai Scott’s attorney, said that “when the dust settles with respect to this case, it’s going to be abundantly clear that Mr. Scott, a licensed gun owner, was acting in self-defense and in defense of his family.”
Benzino, who lives in Atlanta, said in a series of interviews from his hospital bed Sunday that he passed his mother Mary Scott’s funeral procession by chance on his way to Plymouth to pick up a friend — a “Love & Hip Hop” VH1 co-star identified as “Stevie J.” He said he had paid respects to his mother prior to the procession to avoid a confrontation with family members he was feuding with over her care.
Police say after Benzino was shot, he got out of his Dodge SUV and roamed the highway shoulder looking for help as his nephew allegedly continued to give chase and fire at him. Benzino eventually got into a relative’s car and was driven to the Duxbury police station.
He was discharged from South Shore Hospital yesterday and returned to Atlanta, according to his lawyer, Martin Leppo. Leppo dismissed Gai Scott’s self-defense claim and said his client did not have a gun.

“I think the events speak for themselves,” Leppo said. “Seven shots and he chased Ray in his Bentley. Doesn’t sound like self-defense to me.”
Leppo said he doesn’t “find it odd at all” that his client happened upon the funeral procession, considering “where he was going, who he was going to see and the timing.”
Leppo said he spoke to Gai Scott for about 30 minutes the day before the shooting regarding what he called his investigation into the “mistreatment of Mary Scott” and related real estate transactions.
Asked by investigators why Benzino would want to harm him, Gai Scott said, “It stemmed from animosity and jealousy,” according to court papers.
