2023 Sugar Bowl Matchup: Texas vs Washington

How did Texas and Washington reach the College Football Playoff? Let’s take a look at how each team’s season went.

Texas (12-1, 8-1 in Big 12)

Texas started its season with a massive win over Alabama in week 2 and only slipped up in a 34-30 loss to Oklahoma on its way to a Big 12 Championship with a 12-1 record. The win over Alabama helped get the Longhorns into the College Football Playoff.

Texas smoked Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Title game and has now won 7 games in a row after the loss to Oklahoma. QB Quinn Ewers dealt with some injuries but is healthy now for the playoff. He threw for 3,161 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year while adding 5 rushing touchdowns in 2023.

The offense has plenty of talent. Unfortunately, running back Jonathon Brooks is out after suffering an ACL injury vs TCU in mid-November. Brooks had 1,139 yards and 10 TDs in 2023. At wide receiver, Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell are big-play threats. Worthy had 969 yards with 5 TDs while Mitchell added 813 yards with 10 TDs.

Worthy is questionable for the semifinal game with an injury.

Washington (13-0, 9-0 in PAC-12)

The Huskies have had an incredible run to 13-0 and a PAC-12 Championship that included two wins over Oregon. Washington beat Oregon 36-33 in the regular season before beating them again 34-31 in the title game.

Washington also had big wins over USC, Utah, and Oregon State in the second half of the season to keep its record perfect. Now, the Huskies are 13-0 and in the College Football Playoff for the second time. The Huskies made it in 2016 and lost the Peach Bowl to Alabama.

Heisman finalist Michael Penix makes this team go as he threw for 4,218 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2023. There is talent at wide receiver as Rome Odunze is one of the nation’s best racking up 81 receptions for 1,428 yards and 13 touchdowns. Ja’Lynn Polk had 60 receptions for 1,000 yards with 8 touchdowns.

At running back, Dillon Johnson had over 1,000 yards to lead the backfield. He had 1,113 yards with 14 touchdowns during the undefeated run.

History of the Sugar Bowl

The Sugar Bowl is held in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has been played since January 1, 1935, making it one of the country’s second-oldest bowl games, tied with the Orange Bowl and Sun Bowl. Tulane Stadium hosted the game initially, but it moved to the Superdome in 1975.

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Sugar Bowl temporarily relocated to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta in 2006. Since 2007, Allstate has been the game’s sponsor, officially naming it the Allstate Sugar Bowl, with previous sponsors including Nokia and USF&G Financial Services.

The Sugar Bowl has a strong historical connection with the Southeastern Conference (SEC), often featuring an SEC team, and this relationship has persisted over the years. Although changes occurred due to conference realignments and efforts to determine a national champion, the bond between the Sugar Bowl and the SEC has remained strong.

Since 2015, the Sugar Bowl has been part of the “New Year’s Six” bowls in rotation for the College Football Playoff, hosting playoff semifinals and other years featuring the best teams from the SEC and the Big 12. As a member of the Bowl Championship Series, the Sugar Bowl also hosted the BCS National Championship Game in 2000 and 2004.

Since the 2014 season, it has been part of the New Year’s Six Bowls, hosting College Football Playoff semifinals once every three years.
