The annual Baylor-McCallie basketball was played at McCallie’s Sports And Activities Center on Friday night in front of another standing-room only, capacity crowd, but it was the guys in Red who did most of the celebrating after beating McCallie, 64-58.
Baylor improves to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in region play while McCallie is now 14-2 overall and 1-1 in the region.

McCallie had been on a roll and had won seven straight games, including a championship title in the Best of Preps tournament at Chattanooga State, but they had no answer for a Baylor squad that improved to 13-3 with its fourth straight win.
Those three losses for Baylor had all come against nationally-ranked out-of-state teams on the road, so those tough early games played to Baylor’s advantage against a really good McCallie team.
Baylor coach Mark Price really liked what he saw, especially from some of his role players that don’t score much.
“We’ve played a tough schedule up to this point and that prepared us to be ready for a game like this,” he said after a big road win.
“This is a huge rivalry and it was a region game on the road, but McCallie has a really good team and they brought out the best in us tonight. I thought we got great play from our guys, especially from our role players who deserve as much credit as anyone.
“I really liked how we built that lead in the second half, but we aren’t perfect and we’ll all get better. I didn’t have my guys in the right spots at the end, but we were able to keep the lead when it counted,” Price added.
Zane Restelli, Kevin Sacas and Nyzaiah Whaley all scored in double figures with 17, 16 and 14 points, respectively, but it was Whaley’s quickness and Sacas’ power inside that provided the margin of victory.
“We didn’t let the crowd affect the way we played. We just did what we were supposed to do and were able to come away with a win. This just proves we can play with anybody,” Whaley said after leading the Baylor rebounders with seven as the Red Raiders had an unofficial 23-18 edge on the boards.

McCallie coach Steve Robison felt like his offense went stale in the third quarter when Baylor had an 18-10 scoring advantage as they stretched a 31-27 halftime lead to 49-37 with one quarter remaining.
“There were too many stretches where our offense just went dead, especially in the third quarter. We dug ourselves a hole and we had a nice comeback, but it was just too little, too late,” he began outside the McCallie dressing room.
“I don’t think we’ve played a whole game yet. You have to play well for four quarter to have a chance against Baylor. I thought we made some nice adjustments in the second half, but it just wasn’t enough. I thought the third quarter was the difference in the game,” the McCallie coach nodded.
Jack Shutters and Restelli scored the first two buckets as Baylor had the early 4-0 lead. The lead changed hands six times in that opening quarter before a layup from Shutters right before the buzzer knotted the score at 15 when the first stanza ended.
Sacas scored on an inside move and Brock Barton swished a 3 from the wing to give Baylor a 20-15 lead in the first minute of the second quarter before McCallie responded with eight unanswered points for a 23-20 lead following a three-point play by Kaleb Gallman with 4:33 left before halftime.
The Red Raiders followed with their own 8-0 run for a 28-23 lead, including a steal and layup by Whaley with 3:33 left that put Baylor ahead to stay.
A slam by Kenneth Chime in the waning seconds cut Baylor’s lead to 31-27 at intermission.
McCallie hung close to start the second half as they got within one point twice, but they didn’t score for the final 3:15 as Baylor stretched the lead to 49-37 with another 8-0 at the end of the quarter.
Baylor scored seven of the first 11 points in the fourth quarter for its biggest lead of the game at 15 points following two free throws by Sacas with 5:05 to play, but that’s when the McCallie defense turned up the pressure.
An 8-0 run by the Blue Tornado got it to 56-49 following a short bank shot by Deshun Tipton with 2:37 to play while Parker Robison scored seven straight points for McCallie to get his team within four points at 60-56 with just under a minute remaining.

But Sacas scored on a putback with 32 seconds left before Whaley added two free throws with 11 ticks remaining, making a late layup by Robison meaningless.
While Restelli, Sacas and Whaley provided the offensive spark for Baylor, Robison finished with 28 points to lead McCallie, including 17 in the second half.
Gallman was next with 13 while Chime was limited to just eight points. The big man from Nigeria did lead his team with eight rebounds before getting into foul trouble late.
Baylor returns to action on Tuesday when they host Knoxville Webb while McCallie will travel to Chattanooga Christian next Friday for its next game.
