WHAT IS “LA VIE EN ROSE”?
In 2007, Marion Cotillard gave an Oscar-winning performance as iconic French singer and songwriter, Edith Piaf, in “La Vie en Rose”, the U.S. title for the film known in France as “La môme”.
Edith Piaf was born Edith Gassion in 1915. As a teen, she sang on the streets of Paris to support herself. At age 20, she became the protegée of nightclub owner Louis Leplée. He dubbed Edith “la môme piaf”. La môme means “kid”, most likely a reference to her diminutive 4’8″ height. “Piaf” means sparrow, an obvious nod to her beautiful voice. Edith later began using Piaf as her surname. In the mid-1940s, Piaf wrote and recorded “La Vie en Rose”. It made her an international star and became her signature song.
