Who Won The Chiefs Raiders Game Today

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs extended their record to 8-3 with a 31-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The defending Super Bowl champions fell behind 14-0 in the first half before outscoring Las Vegas 31-3 to close out their Week 12 win.

First quarter

The Chiefs won the opening coin toss, deferring the decision of kicking or receiving to the second half. That gave Las Vegas the ball to start the game; the Raiders started at the 25-yard line after a touchback.

Raiders’ rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell looked poised early and often on the Raiders’ opening drive, converting three third downs through the air and navigating the blitz effectively. One completion was wide receiver Davante Adams beating cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, then wide receiver Jakobi Meyers found space to catch and run into the end zone. That gave Las Vegas an early 7-0 lead.

Looking to answer, Kansas City tried to catch the Raiders with a screen pass to running back Isiah Pacheco — but it was blown up for a loss of 11 yards. That led to a three and out, and a quick punt.

Las Vegas continued picking apart the Chiefs’ defense, converting two more third downs and using quick passes to move across midfield. Eventually, Chiefs’ linebacker Drue Tranquill shot through the line for a tackle for loss, setting up third and 11 just outside the red zone.

After a completion short of the sticks, the Raiders chose to kick a field goal — and the attempt was missed. That gave the Chiefs the ball back at their own 20-yard line, starting with an 11-yard catch by Pacheco that took the game into the second quarter.

Second quarter

Two plays after the Chiefs’ initial first down of the game, the offense faced third and eight — and failed to convert. A deep pass to wide receiver Justin Watson fell to the turf far from where he was, with physical coverage holding up his route. It led to another punt.

Las Vegas continued moving the ball on offense, but didn’t take as much time on the third possession: running back Josh Jacobs found space on the second play of the drive, sprinting down the left sideline from 63 yards out and giving the Raiders a 14-0 advantage.

The Chiefs needed a strong drive to stay in the game, and they got it: from the 29-yard line, the offense embarked on a possession that lasted 12 plays, gained six first downs, and ended with a touchdown run by Pacheco. Catch and runs by tight end Noah Gray, wide receivers Skyy Moore and Rashee Rice highlighted the team’s first scoring drive of the game; the Raiders still led 14-7.

Needing a stop, the Chiefs’ defense stepped up after one first down on the next drive. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi made a terrific play against the run, setting up third and long; on that snap, a screen pass was swallowed up by defensive end Mike Danna. It was the Raiders’ first punt of the game.

With under four minutes remaining in the first half, the Chiefs’ offense quickly worked into scoring position when Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce downfield for a 28-yard gain. The Chiefs were knocking on the door at the Raiders’ 30-yard line, when the two-minute warning hit.

Out of the break, a reverse and pitch back created space for another big completion to Kelce, putting the Chiefs at the seven-yard line. A Pacheco run advanced Kansas City to the four-yard line for third and goal; on that play, Mahomes had to buy time in his drop back, but found wide receiver Justin Watson in the end zone to tie the game. The score was 14-14 with 25 seconds remaining in the half.

After a return to the 27-yard line, the Raiders attempted a pass on first down that fell incomplete. A second pass gained 11 yards, but it led into halftime, holding the score at 14-14.

Third quarter

The Chiefs took the ball to start the second half, and didn’t mess around with it. Mahomes was efficient, finding Gray and Rice for big completions. Then, a designed screen to Pacheco found space and nearly scored. One play later, Pacheco punched it in on the ground and gave the Chiefs a 21-14 lead.

Looking to answer, the Raiders’ run game was clogged up on the drive’s first two plays; on third down, a deep attempt fell to the ground, and Las Vegas punted back to the Chiefs quickly.

Kansas City’s offense quickly faced third down on its drive, after a drop by Rashee Rice. The Raiders dropped eight players into coverage after crowding the line of scrimmage, which tripped up Mahomes and eventually led to a sack. The Chiefs punted back to Las Vegas.

The Raiders got the offense revved up with an opening completion to tight end Michael Mayer, gaining 17 yards. On a third down soon after, O’Connell threw a perfect pass to Meyers on a fade, beating cornerback Trent McDuffie deep and setting up Las Vegas in the red zone.

From there, safety Justin Reid helped the Chiefs force a fourth down with a strong tackle for loss early in the downs. The Raiders settled for a field goal, tightening Kansas City’s lead to 21-17.

The Chiefs kept rolling on offense, using a 16-yard completion to Kelce and a 10-yard gain by Pacheco through the air to work past midfield. Before the third quarter ended, another nice play was negated by holding on right tackle Jawaan Taylor.

Fourth quarter

Kansas City quickly faced third and five to open the final period, and the offense converted with a quick completion to Rice on the shallow crosser. He wasn’t done at the first down marker, taking it 39 yards into the end zone to extend the Chiefs’ lead to 28-17.

The Raiders threatened to score by getting across midfield quickly, using tight ends in the pass game to do so. However, the Chiefs’ defense clamped down from there, forcing a punt from the 44-yard line.

With nine minutes to go and 93 yards away from the end zone, the Chiefs failed to get much going after a strong catch by Rice to gain 19 yards down the sideline. The team punted back to the Raiders with roughly eight minutes on the clock.

Las Vegas failed to get past the first-down marker on the ensuing drive, getting stopped just short on third down. On the fourth down attempt, defensive tackle Chris Jones and linebacker Drue Tranquill penetrated the backfield and made a tackle for loss. That gave the Chiefs possession at the Raiders’ 17-yard line.

Pacheco took over from there, moving the chains twice and getting to the five-yard line. However, a holding penalty on center Creed Humphrey set the Chiefs back for first and goal from the 15-yard line. A false start call on Jawaan Taylor added onto the setbacks, leading Kansas City to eventually kick a field goal. It pushed the team’s lead to 31-17.

With the Raiders in desperation mode, the Chiefs’ defense quickly forced a third down with strong pass defense. On that drop back, a blitz left defensive end George Karlaftis all by himself to bear hug O’Connell for a sack. That led to the two-minute warning.

On fourth and 21, a quick pass looked to turn into a pitch-back drill, but Chiefs’ defensive end Mike Danna made the game-sealing tackle quickly after the play started.

The Chiefs’ offense was able to run out the clock from there, sealing a 31-17 victory in Las Vegas.

Injuries

Left tackle Donovan Smith stayed down after a play in the third quarter, but walked off the field under his own power quickly after. He returned to the game quickly.

Cornerback Trent McDuffie voluntarily came out of the game after going to the ground hard defending a completion in the third quarter. He returned to the field soon after.

Special Teams

Punter Tommy Townsend pinned the Raiders at their own 19-yard line with his first of four punts in the game. Later in the contest, he had another land inside the 20-yard line.

Kicker Harrison Butker made his first four point-after attempts of the game in the second quarter. Late in the fourth quarter, he made a 32-yard field goal to extend the Chiefs’ lead.

Punt returner Richie James gained 10 yards on his first attempt of the game, in the second quarter. He also returned one kick for 29 yards.
