Who Won The Fonda 200 Last Night

Six laps after the 100-lap break, the race was red-flagged for a multi-car wreck that ended the night for several top contenders including Rocky Warner, who was injured when his car was hit broadside. Warner was alert and talking with track emergency crews before being transported to Albany Medical Center.

Warner’s wife Tami posted on his media page Sunday morning that nothing is broken, but he had a laceration on his face that needed five stitches. There are no heart or spinal injuries, but his neck and shoulder are sore from being hit in the helmet. Warner remains under observation at Albany Med to get his blood pressure to get under control.

In the companion 25-lap, $2,000-to-win STSS 602 Crate Sportsman feature, Payton Talbot passed early-race leader Brian Calabrese with 11 laps to go to claim his seventh win of the season. Chad Edwards recovered from a mid-race incident to finish second ahead of Joe Toth, Tyler Peet and Tim Hartman Jr.

Race action for the Fonda 200 Weekend started Thursday night with the running of the Ultimate Underdog 33 with Danny Varin taking home the victory, while Mike Arnold picked up the win in the 20-lap Limited Sportsman feature.

Friday night features for the Pro Stocks, Street Stocks, 4-cylinder Mini Stocks and the CRSA 305 Sprint Cars were run along with four Fonda 200 qualifying events for the Modifieds.

Kenny Gates picked up his second straight Fonda 200 Weekend victory and sixth win of the season in the 20-lap Pro Stock feature. Gates took the lead from 2023 Pro Stock track champion Ivan Joslin on lap 13 and held off Joslin’s challenges over the final seven laps to record his 92nd win of his career in the division at Fonda Speedway. Beau Ballard finished third, with Jim Normoyle fourth and Steve Cosselman fifth.

Ken Hollenbeck picked up his 95th career Mini Stock feature win at Fonda Speedway, topping the field for the overall and Single Cam victories, while Jay Ingersoll held off Damian Ward for his first career win at Fonda in the dual cam division.

Mike Kiser led the opening 11 laps of the 20-lap CRSA A-Main before stopping with mechanical issues. Blake Warner took over the lead on the ensuing restart before Jordan Hutton slipped past a lap later and held on for his third CRSA win of his career at Fonda Speedway. Warner finished second with Billy VanInwegen third, Dalton Herrick fourth and Tomy Moreau fifth.

The Street Stock division made its return to Fonda Speedway Friday night.

Adam Tranka led the opening 18 laps of the scheduled 20-lap feature before a flat right front tire ended his run. Jason Meltz inherited the lead and was awarded the victory after 19 laps in the caution-marred event. Chris Murray was second, followed by PJ Cram, Andrew Fitzgerald and Lou Gancarz.

Alex Yankowski, JaMike Sowle, Friesen and Steve Bernier picked up the victories in the 15-lap Fonda 200 qualifiers to earn first picks in the 12-driver redraw for the main event.

Yankowski drew the seventh spot, while Sowle pulled the sixth spot and Parker Friesen drew the pole for his father with Bernier picking up the number two spot on the starting grid.

Bernier led the opening 14 laps of the feature before Friesen, Sheppard and Yankowski got by him in traffic.

Friesen held the lead until pitting under caution on lap 96, handing the lead over the Sheppard four laps before the 100-lap break.

During the break, drivers had the option of going to the pit area to change tires, add fuel and make adjustments or go to the infield, where they could only add fuel and make air pressure adjustments, but would be first back on track.

Marc Johnson, Chris Curtis, Bobby Varin, Calabrese, Friesen, Bernier and Matt DeLorenzo opted to pit on the infield. Andy Bachetti and Ryan Odasz also came to the infield but opted to pull out and go to the pit area during the 10-minute break.

Curtis and Johnson led the cars back to the green for the second 100-lap segment, with Friesen and Varin making up the second row.

Johnson bolted into the lead and was in control when the caution flew after just three laps.

On the restart, a mid-pack scramble resulted in the red flag being thrown for a 15-car accident that resulted in significant damage to 12 cars and finished their night. Warner’s car was caught in the middle of the melee with the front of Mike Mahaney’s modified resting in the window of his modified.

Warner was conscious and talking with the emergency crews as he was extricated from the car and transported by ambulance to the hospital.

When racing resumed, Johnson continued to set the pace with Friesen, Tyler Dippel, Sheppard and Curtis in pursuit.

Friesen again used lapped traffic to his advantage and took the lead from Johnson on lap 129, with Sheppard settling into second 10 laps later.

Sheppard used a lap restart on lap 150 to get back into the lead with Friesen, Johnson, Dippel and Tim Fuller running in the top five.

Traffic again became a factor allowing Friesen and Johnson to stay within striking distance of the leader.

Johnson’s strong run came to an end when a flat rear tire sent him to the pit and brought out the caution.

The caution was the break Friesen was looking for as he got in front of Sheppard on the restart and survived a second restart with 15 laps to go before holding off a final charge by Sheppard to post his 88th career modified feature win at the Track of Champions.

“The tires were so weird,” Friesen said in Victory Lane. “I finally got the lead and felt like we were rolling. On the restart where Sheppard got us, it felt like I had a flat, then it got rolling again. On that last restart there was some brown up at the top and I was able to grab enough of it to make it work.”

Sheppard echoed Friesen’s statement about the tires.

“The tires were very finicky on the restarts,” he said. “When I got by him, my tires fired really good and his didn’t. Then when he got by me, his did and mine didn’t. He got a heck of a run on the outside and I spun my tires a little bit off two. That was the difference in the race.”

Sheppard’s tires came back in the final 10 laps, but he could not chase down Friesen before the checkers flew.

“He was getting jammed up in traffic and was just kind of taking it easy,” Sheppard said. “There just wasn’t enough racetrack left. The bottom of four was rubbered up hard and after a couple of laps it was hard to make anything happen.”

Friesen said he wasn’t going to move off the bottom of the racetrack in the closing laps.

“I caught Cody [Clark] at the end and I am, like, keep it rolling dude,” Friesen said. “I wasn’t getting off the bottom again. I did once and Sheppard got by us. He was going to have to go around us. I was afraid though that he was going to find something.”

Dippel came across the line in third for his best career finish at Fonda Speedway, with Mat Williamson fourth and Fuller fifth. Anthony Perrego, Jessica Friesen, DeLorenzo, Calabrese and Danny Bouc complete the top 10.

“It feels really good to get this one at our home track,” Stewart Friesen said. “This year has been the worst. We finally got our motor program back situated. We have the bullets back in the gun now to go into the big money season and this is what we have prepared for all year.”

The Fonda 200 Weekend was the final event up the 2023 season at Fonda Speedway.
