CANTON — The 134th McKinley-Massillon high school football game will be remembered for more than just the Tigers winning yet again.
Following Massillon’s impressive 35-0 win in a penalty-filled rivalry game, emotions boiled over during the postgame handshakes.

Soon a scuffle broke out among players, leading to a chaotic scene on the field. Opposing players went after each other, as coaches and staff from each team did their best to avoid a full-scale brawl by sending their players to their respective locker rooms.
“Undisciplined. We’re undisciplined and that was an embarrassment,” McKinley head coach Antonio Hall said.
“It’s really sad,” Massillon head coach Nate Moore said. “It’s really sad that happened. It should never happen. Everybody’s got to do a better job of keeping their composure. Win, lose or draw, there’s going to be things that are bigger than that, and acting right at the end of a ballgame has got to be one of them. So it’s really sad how that went down.”

Amidst the melee, players mostly pushed, shoved and shouted at each other, while a coach could be heard shouting, “Get back! Get back! Get back!”
Here’s one view of what happened from the phone of Canton Repository sports writer Josh Weir:
The ugly scene included a fan in the stands later shouting threats at Massillon players as they finally headed to their locker, before the fan was chased by law enforcement.
The game featured 32 penalties between the two teams. Given the amount of penalties and the tension the game creates, Hall was asked if there should be a handshake line after a contentious game.
“You anticipate what we’re teaching these kids is about dealing with adversity, about being young men, about handling stuff the right way,” Hall said. “You hope that that stuff carries over when it has to. But obviously I still have a lot of work to do with my group.”

“I’m not sure,” Moore said. “It was a melee seemingly out of nowhere. I don’t know where it started from. It got out of hand real fast.”
Hall also does not know what touched it off.
“Shaking hands, most of the way through, and then Massillon’s players said, ‘Coach, they’re fighting over there,’ ” Hall said. “So me and a bunch of the Massillon coaches and my coaches went over there. Then it went from one end of the field to the other. It just kept happening.”
Will there be disciplinary actions or suspensions from the Massillon-McKinley scuffle?
As a result of the melee, there’s a chance players from each team could face disciplinary action and perhaps miss games as a result of a suspension. Each team will host a state playoff game Friday night.
“Whatever it is is what it is,” Moore said of potential discipline players could face. “It seemed like there was as many cameras out filming as there were punches being thrown. So I’m sure we’re going to figure out exactly what happened.”
Hall was quite succinct on his thoughts about his players being disciplined.
“We deserve what we get,” the former All-Ohio McKinley offensive lineman said.
