Forty-eight years after the release of their hit “Jackie Blue,” The Ozark Mountain Daredevils released a new version of the song, available for streaming Friday.

The New “Jackie Blue”

“Jackie Blue 2,” released by Saguaro Road Records, features vocals from Springfield-based musician Molly Healey. Healey began performing with the Daredevils as a guest fiddler, cellist, and back-up vocalist in 2012, and officially joined the band right before the pandemic.

Healey said there had been “mumbling” about recording a new version of the song for about a year. She began by singing “Jackie Blue” at Daredevils’ live performances to test the waters. After a few successful shows, the Daredevils’ manager asked her if she’d be interested in singing the lead vocals for a newly-recorded track.

“I knew about the Daredevils, but if you were to ask me if I would’ve ever had the chance to even perform with them, much less record one of their songs, I would have told you that you were absolutely nuts,” Healey said, reflecting on getting her start in bluegrass music in her 20s. “I just really did not see this coming.”

Comments: It’s incredible to see Molly Healey’s journey from being a fan of the Daredevils to becoming a member of the band and recording a new version of their famous song. Her passion and talent have allowed her to seize this unexpected opportunity.

The Origins of “Jackie Blue”

The original “Jackie Blue” was released in 1975 on the Daredevils’ second album, “It’ll Shine When It Shines.” The single quickly made its way to the No. 3 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, according to a news release.

Former Daredevils’ drummer Larry Lee wrote and sang the song about a male drug dealer he had known once, according to a Daredevils’ social media post about the song’s history.

“I was, of course, really nervous because this is a song people have been listening to for decades now, and they’d heard it a certain way, and people don’t like change,” Healey said. “At first, I was trying to make it sound a lot like how I heard it and emulate Larry’s vocals.”

Comments: Molly Healey’s apprehension about making the song her own is understandable. The original version holds a special place in people’s hearts, and deviating from it can be risky. However, it’s admirable that she eventually found the confidence to put her own spin on it.

Embracing Change

But mimicking Lee’s high male vocals was a struggle, and after a few takes, the band encouraged her to make it her own.

“Once I gave myself the grace to depart from the original version, it just came out a lot easier,” Healey said with a laugh. “They’re just two completely different versions of the song.”

Comments: Molly Healey’s decision to embrace her own style and interpretation of “Jackie Blue” is commendable. It takes courage to deviate from a well-known original, but by doing so, she has made the song her own and brought a fresh perspective to it.
