Who Wrote This World Is Not My Home Lyrics

THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME written in 1919

The Story

As a boy, Albert Brumley (1905-1977) grew up picking cotton in Oklahoma… and he knew he wanted more from life than that. He wanted to write songs for the Lord. So he did. He enrolled in the Hartford Musical Institute of Hartford, AR, and studied there through 1931. He then married Goldie Schell and they moved to Missouri, where they raised 6 children. Albert would become a prominent shape-note gospel music composer and publisher… and all 3 states – Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri – are proud to claim him as their own.

You know many of his songs, including: “I’ll Fly Away”, “Turn Your Radio On”, “If We Never Meet Again This Side of Heaven”, “I’ll Meet You in the Morning”, and “He Set Me Free”… just to name a few. He wrote over 800 songs. Part of the reason he wrote shape-note music was to aid in learning music. He was a member of the Church of Christ; his songs were not sung to instruments in his church.

Albert had grown up in poverty, and would witness 2 world wars and the Great Depression. Life would never be “easy”, but Albert would learn life is easier when you allow Jesus to walk beside you.

2 themes seem to pop up in Albert’s songs over and over again; Heaven and Jesus. Having a personal relationship with Jesus brings a little bit of Heaven here to earth.

A Christian’s citizenship is no longer here on earth, but in Heaven. It’s plainly written in Scripture: “This World Is Not My Home”.

The Song

Read this hymn, and – today – evaluate which world you’re calling “home”.

This world is not my home, I’m just a-passing through, my treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue; the angels beckon me from heaven’s open door and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

Chorus O Lord, You know I have no friend like You, if heaven’s not my home, then, Lord, what will I do? The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door, and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

They’re all expecting me, and that’s one thing I know, my Savior pardoned me and now I onward go; I know He’ll take me thro’ tho’ I am and weak and poor, and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore. (Chorus)

I have a loving Savior up in gloryland, I don’t expect to stop until I with Him stand, He’s waiting now for me in heaven’s open door, and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore. (Chorus)

Just up in gloryland, we’ll live eternally, the saints on every hand are shouting victory, their songs of sweetest praise drift back from heaven’s shore, and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore. (Chorus)
