Who Wrote Unthinkable

Drake’s incredible discography is chock full of genre-spanning smashes. From smooth R&B ballads to energetic dance club hits, the 6 God’s output is so prolific that there’s a good chance there are some songs you didn’t even know he had a hand in.

As Drizzy continues his chart domination this summer ’16 with his dancefloor magnet “One Dance” and DJ Khaled collaboration “For Free,” here are some other jams you probably had no idea Drake penned.

How Drake Conquered Streaming

1. “R.I.P.” – Rita Ora

When Rita Ora first broke out onto the scene, she was in need of tracks to elevate her from a UK songstress to a worldwide pop star, one of which was this Tinnie Tempah collaboration titled “R.I.P.” While the song sounds tailor-made for Ora, it was originally co-written by Drake. There were rumors that the track was intended for Rihanna’s 2010 album Loud, but Ora denied that report in a 2012 interview with The Sunday Times, saying “RIP” wasn’t written for Rihanna. But even if it was played to her, I don’t care. As soon as I heard it, I said it was mine. I was going to fight for that song.”

2. “Fall For Your Type” – Jamie Foxx

Aside from his incredible IMDb profile, actor Jamie Foxx boasts an equally successful run as a singer, most notably on the ubiquitous smash “Blame it on the Alcohol.” It was on Foxx’s fourth album, Best Night of my Life, where the multi-hyphenate enlisted an old demo from Drake dubbed “Fall for Your Type.” Knowing a hit jam when he hears one, Foxx re-recorded Drake’s version and made it the album’s single.

3. “I’ve Been That Girl” – Melanie Fiona

As a struggling teen creative in Toronto, Drake wasn’t just clocking in as a star of the cult hit Degrassi but creating music as part of a group called the The Renaissance. While the collective wound up going nowhere, Drake co-wrote “I’ve Been That Girl” with fellow Renaissance member and T-Dot rep, Grammy-winning singer Melanie Fiona, that later made its way to Fiona’s LP The MF Life.

4. “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)”- Alicia Keys

Appearing on Keys’ 2010 album The Element of Freedom, “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” is a sultry ballad that quickly found itself atop Billboard’s R&B charts. The two, who previously collaborated on “Fireworks” off Drake’s 2010 debut Thank Me Later, reunited for the Noah “40” Shebib cut, co-written by Drake.

He told BET at the time, “It is [about Minaj], I’m not gonna lie … The concept came from a conversation that we had, or conversations we have. I wrote it based off two things: Number one, based off that, and then two, based off Alicia and Swizz and their situation, and it just seemed fitting. It was like the perfect concept.”

5. “30 Hours,” “Father Stretch My Hands” and “Facts” – Kanye West

When West’s seventh studio effort Life of Pablo dropped earlier this year, the set made headlines across the world thanks to its provocative lyrics, choppy release strategy and West’s bizarre Twitter antics. However, what many may have missed is that Pablo’s songwriting credits included Drake, who’s listed as a co-writer on the track “30 Hours” and “Facts.”

West praised Drake for his contributions, tweeting, “I wanna thank my brother Drizzy for helping me on 30 Hours & Father Stretch My Hands. Drake would come by and just help, no strings. Future also came by to write. We all got new shit together that’s gonna drop soon.”

6. “Mine” – Beyoncé

Drake, a certified Beyhive member, teamed with Mrs. Carter for the moody deep cut “Mine” off her 2013 self-titled album. Drizzy’s OVO crew Noah “40” Shebib and Majid Jordan also lent offered their assistance to the Beyoncé track.
