Who Wrote Yamz

On November 19th, Masego and singer-songwriter Devin Morrison released the new single “Yamz.” Featuring the smooth R&B vibes that Masego is known for – in addition to his trap-house jazz, of course – “Yamz” sees the two men asking one simple question: “Can I get to the yamz?” What constitutes the yamz in the context of this song is purposely ambiguous. It could be money. It could be sex. It could be love. It could be fame.

At some points, it will seem that it is obviously about a singular one of those topics, but then Masego and Devin Morrison will flip the meaning. The lyrics’ constantly changing meaning might seem confusing on the surface, but one lyric in particular is the thesis of the song: “But is it just a distraction?/Oh, it drives my soul divine (Them yamz got soul).” The specific meaning of yamz in the context of the song doesn’t exist because any of those possible definitions are driving forces in someone’s life. Anyone can relate to the lyrics of “Yamz,” whether they’re after money or fame, sex or love, or something else completely.

That’s not even touching on the sound of this song. The production on this, handled by Devin Morrison and Crazy Mike, is incredible. The sounds are lifted straight from the greatest R&B sounds of all time, and Masego’s voice and saxophone sound phenomenal. The doubling of the melody and rhythm of the chorus in the synthesizers and the piano is straight out of the 80s, and the bass sounds like the 90s. Of course, Masego and Devin Morrison sound like the modern R&B era in their vocals, and this synthesis creates perfection.

While the concept might seem a bit simple, I challenge any one of you to listen to listen to this song and not start body-rolling. The hook is infectious, the bass is moving, and if you’re looking for something to compare it to from the last 5 years, this is a song that would fit perfectly on Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic. For those of you reading in Europe, you have opportunities in early 2022 to catch Masego live, which I highly recommend. The man is a powerhouse performer.

Check out “Yamz” below, and if you like what you hear from Masego, also check out “Garden Party” and his 2018 album Lady Lady! As always, let us know what you think! I know I’m going to check out Devin Morrison after listening to this track. The man’s voice and production abilities are incredible.
