Let’s take a quick look at how this season went for each team.

Maryland (7-5 overall, 4-5 in Big Ten)

Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa had 3,377 yards passing with 25 touchdowns during the regular season. He added 5 rushing touchdowns but he has decided to opt out of the bowl game leaving the likely starter as Billy Edwards who had limited playing time in 2023.

Roman Hemby led the ground game with 663 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns while also catching 3 TD passes. At wide receiver, Jeshaun Jones was the standout as he caught 53 passes for 747 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Auburn (6-6 overall, 3-5 in SEC)

Unfortunately for the Tigers, their season will be remembered for giving up a final second TD on 4th and goal from the 31-yard line. The Tigers barely rushed three guys and gave Jalen Milroe all the time in the world to find Isaiah Bond in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown and a 27-24 win.

The Tigers could have kept Alabama out of the College Football Playoff with a win and now Auburn is fighting to finish above .500 on the season. Payton Thorne took the majority of snaps at quarterback and had 15 passing touchdowns on the season. He threw for 1,671 yards and added 520 yards on the ground with 3 TDs.

History of the Music City Bowl

The Music City Bowl has been a vibrant event in Nashville, Tennessee, since 1998. With TransPerfect as the title sponsor since 2020, it is officially known as the TransPerfect Music City Bowl. Over the years, it has seen various sponsors, including American General Life & Accident, HomePoint.com, Gaylord Entertainment, Bridgestone, and Franklin American Mortgage Company.

The bowl has had dynamic conference tie-ins, starting with the SEC and the Big East, later replaced by the Big Ten. The ACC joined in 2005 and took over from the Big Ten in 2006.

In 2014, the Music City Bowl collaborated with the Gator Bowl, sharing its tie-in with the SEC and either an ACC or Big Ten team. Notably, the 2020 edition faced a cancellation due to COVID-19 issues within Missouri’s program. The bowl has a rich history, starting at Vanderbilt Stadium and moving to Nissan Stadium in 1999.

From its early years with American General Life & Accident to the current sponsorship by TransPerfect, the Music City Bowl remains a celebrated fixture, announcing an extended agreement with the SEC and the Big Ten for the 2020 through 2025 seasons in June 2019.
