Why Are Altima Drivers So Bad

When it comes to bad driving, its the person behind the wheel who makes all the difference – and the internet has seized on Nissan Altima drivers as the chief culprits.

Since they first hit the streets in 1992, drivers of the humble sedan have been the punchline for never ending jokes.

Now the cars have their own cult following online with enthusiasts uploading photos and videos dedicated to ‘Big Altima Energy’ – or BAE – typified by car crashes, hair-raising police chases and comical mistakes.

Some petrolheads insist that motorists guilty of BAE are not limited to Altima drivers, with one Reddit user describing surmising it’s ‘an idea, feeling, or lifestyle that transcends beyond any one car or brand… BAE means being as trashy as possible.’

While social media has always been flooded with wild road rage brawls and stupid driving videos, the emergence of Big Altima Energy is seemingly more niche.

The craze stems from a reckless, laissez-faire attitude to the road, where motorists drive around without windows or with huge dents and don’t care about the damage.

‘What really defines BAE is a complete lack of responsibility,’ said one social media user commenting on the trend.

They explained that while a BMW, another car with a reputation for bad driving, might cut someone off, their drivers are likely to still look to see if there is space to do so because ‘they still care about what happens to their vehicle.’

‘An Altima driver doesn’t care that their front bumper is missing,’ they added. ‘If you are in the way they won’t mind collecting another dent.’

According to a study conducted by insurance comparison site Value Penguin, Nissan Altimas were the ninth most likely car to be in a fatal crash from 2013 to 2018 – although the vehicles only accounted for around a third of the 10,845 wrecks that involved the leader, Ford F-Series trucks, in the same timeframe.

The rise of ‘Big Altima Energy’ follows in the footsteps of other hilarious internet memes like entitled ‘Karens’ asking to see the manager, with clips of BAE behavior often showing crazy, unhinged situations.

In one viral video shared on a BAE dedicated Facebook page, a woman was seen booting the front bumper of an Altima after it clipped her car. With a growing crowd hollering at the scenes, the driver then apparently provides a perfect example of ‘Big Altima Energy.’

Without a thought of their own battered motor, the driver speeds into the woman’s car and continually dents and damages the vehicle.

Some viewers added that the woman’s fury was also a case-in-point of the hold Altima’s seem to have over people, with one describing her as ‘a mess’.

Another absurd Altima-inspired fiasco saw a family stood talking by the side of the road, when one of the Nissan’s flew past them at breakneck speed.

The Altima was quickly followed by two police cars lighting up the road, as viewers said the daring car chase was typical of ‘Altima energy.’

In a statement to DailyMail.com, Nissan said it ‘encourages safe and considerate driving’ and ‘all motorists are responsible for obeying the traffic laws wherever they operate their vehicle.’

Ironically, the reason Altimas have earned their reputation for accidents and mistakes may be because of an advantage the cars had over a decade ago.

In 2002, Nissan was ahead of the curve with its engine manufacturing and was one of the first automakers to install Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) into their cars.

Within a few years many Nissans were upgraded with the tech, including Altimas. The CVTs keep the engine’s pistons firing at the most efficient speed thanks to its expansive gear ratios.

This essentially gave the cars a powerful acceleration that jumped them off the line, and provides their drivers an added push in situations like overtaking.
