Why are flags flying at half-staff?
On Friday, Sept. 29, longtime California senator Dianne Feinstein died at age 90.
In the wake of her death, the White House released a statement from President Joe Biden calling Feinstein a “pioneering American and a true trailblazer” throughout her career in government.
“In San Francisco, she showed enormous poise and courage in the wake of tragedy, and became a powerful voice for American values. In the United States, she turned passion into purpose, and led the fight to ban assault weapons, also making her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties,” read the statement.

“Senator Feinstein was a role model for so many Americans and she had an immense impact on younger female leaders for whom she generously opened doors. She was a historic figure, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations.”
Biden exercised his power as president and issued a proclamation on Friday ordering that the American flag be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations and on all naval vessels of the federal government in the District of Columbia, and throughout the U.S. and its territories and possessions in honor of Feinstein.
The flag also will be flown at half-staff at all U.S. embassies, consular offices, legations and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
How long will flags be flown at half-staff?
Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Feinstein’s funeral, according to the White House.
Feinstein will lie in state in San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 4, before she is laid to rest on Thursday in a closed service that will be livestreamed at City Hall and online, according to CNN.
