Surprised at how expensive flights are to Belize?
Especially if you compare a flight from the USA to Cancun, flights to Belize can look very expensive.

However, there are quite a few reasons why flights to Belize are more expensive.
Let’s take a look…
Lack Of Competition Flying To Belize
Belize is just not as popular a destination as somewhere like Cancun. And the less people fly somewhere, the more expensive it tends to get. A little bit like an expensive car!
Competition pushes prices down, and there are significantly less flights to Belize each month.
If you check FlightConnnections.com, they show you roughly how many direct flights there are to a destination. Sure, this is not an exact science, but gives us a rough idea of how many flights go somewhere.

Let’s compare Belize and Cancun.
As you can see in the image above, there are significantly more flights into Cancun than in Belize. And this is just direct flights.
This leads to significant price differences in the flights which you can see below, for the same period (February 2024)
As you can see, this leads to nearly half the price.
Seasonality
Seasonality is always a factor in any flight price, and flights to Belize are more expensive at certain times of the year. The heat and humidity play a huge role in countries like Belize, and the driest time of the year is mid-November to Mid-April.
The opposite side of the coin to this is the wet season which runs from May to November.
So, if you take these seasons into account, along with the Christmas and New Year peak, you will see that prices are lower in the wet season, and higher in the dry season.

The image above is from Skyscanner and show which months are the cheapest to fly, and which months are the most expensive to Belize. Lo and behold, the cheapest months are in the wet seasons, and December is even higher as everyone travels at Christmas.
Distance
Distance plays a role in the price of any flight to Belize because the further you fly, the more it costs the airline to run that flight. Fuel, staff, food and beverage etc. all cost more for a longer flight.
Now, a flight to Belize is not that much further than say Cancun, but it is not as close as anywhere in the USA, Canada or Mexico. At least in most of the cases.
And even if you compare Belize to Cancun:
- San Francisco – Belize: 7 hours 25 minutes
- San Francisco – Cancun: 5 hours 25 minutes
You can see that there is a 2-hour flight time difference.
Fuel Costs
Fuel prices have been on the rise since the war started last year. And although the prices have started to drop since the peak last year, they take a while to trickle down to the consumer like you and I.
Airlines don’t pay for fuel on the day they fly, they typically lock-in contracts with suppliers for longer periods.
And with 25% of their costs being in fuel alone, you can see why rising fuel prices recently have made flying even more expensive!
