Any regular user knows that Stories appear in a row at the top of the app. Those who you interact with the most appear at the front and you’re able to view everyone’s Stories in sequence. It’s simple but intuitive – and that’s what makes viewing Stories so addictive.
On 6 June the layout of Stories at the top of the app was altered ever so slightly; however, this has caused something of an uproar in the Insta community. Before, when a user posted a Story, their profile picture appeared at the top of the app surrounded by a purple ring. That’s still the case but now the profile photos are bigger as if they have been zoomed in.

Why are Instagram Stories bigger? The change to the size of Instagram Stories appears to be a glitch. Thankfully, it can be fixed. The issue fully rolled out with the 6 June version 286.0 update. Unfortunately, Meta has not explained what caused the glitch or, if intentional, the reason for the change.
The notes for version 286.0 do not provide any details and simply state: “The latest version contains bug fixes and performance improvements.”

As always with changes to popular social media platforms, this alteration to the layout has not been well received by users. Consequently, many want to know how to make Instagram Stories smaller and how to fix the issue.
This is how to make Instagram Stories smaller: To return the Story icons to their original size, simply delete and reinstall the Instagram app.

When you go back into the app, you will notice that the row of Stories will look just as it did before.
How have users reacted to the change?
Not unexpectedly, users aren’t happy with the change to Stories.
Twitter user @cullenahughes wrote, “WHY ARE THE INSTAGRAM STORIES SO BIG ALL OF A SUDDEN” alongside a GIF of a disappointed reaction. @PopCulture2000s posted a shocked reaction GIF and wrote, “the instagram stories circle are huge”.
@jonah_manzano provided a helpful comparison (seen above) to show how Instagram looked before and after the change.
