Why Are There 2 Monday Night Football Games

Monday is the last night of the weekend for fans to get their fill of football. This week, they’ll get two games in one night.

There will be two “Monday Night Football” games at the end of Week 14, both at the same time. The Titans will be in Miami to face the Dolphins, and the Packers will head to New York to play the Giants.

This will be the third time this year “Monday Night Football” hosts a pair of games. On Sept. 18 and Sept. 25, there were two games each night.

Why will fans have choices to make or screens to split on Monday? Here’s what you need to know.

Where are there two NFL games tonight?

There is not a specific reason for the two games being put on Monday. ESPN said only in its release that by having two games at the same time, “ESPN and the NFL transform a Sunday afternoon environment into a primetime window.”

“The latest schedule innovation during ESPN’s most comprehensive NFL season in the company’s history, features multiple games with playoff implications,” the release said.

The “Monday Night Football” schedule will be looking a little different down the stretch of the season. Rather than having a “Monday Night Football” game on Jan. 1, there will instead be a game on Saturday, Dec. 30, carried by the ESPN networks.

The reason for that change is easier to explain: Jan. 1 will be filled with New Year’s 6 bowl games, including the two College Football Playoff semifinal games. Moving the Monday NFL game to Saturday will clear the schedule and make that Monday all about college football.

In a unique change, both games will be carried at the same time on ESPN2 on the ManningCast, with Peyton and Eli Manning watching the two games side-by-side. The release notes that, as needed, they will focus on one game or the other.

History of ‘MNF’ doubleheaders
