Why Are There Commercials On Paramount Plus

Imagine this; you’re watching one of your favorite Paramount Plus shows on the streaming service, and you’re really getting into the storyline.

Suddenly, the screen goes dark for a moment, and your show is interrupted by a commercial. That can be frustrating if you’re using a streaming service and doubly frustrating if you’re paying for the “ad-free” Paramount+ Premium service level.

Why does your Paramount Plus service have commercials? Here are three key reasons you might be seeing ads during your show.

You subscribed to the Ad-Supported Tier of Paramount Plus

The Paramount Plus streaming service has two levels of service. There is the Essential plan and the Premium plan.

The Essential plan costs about half as much as the Premium plan. But in exchange for that reduced cost, you’ll need to sit through “limited commercial interruptions.”

In short, the Essential plan is an ad-supported tier of Paramount+. If you use the Essential plan, you’ll pay less per month, but your stream will have commercials.

If you see commercials on Paramount Plus, check your plan level. You may have signed up for the Essential Plan. You can always upgrade to Premium to cut out most (but not all, as we’ll get into below) of the ads.

A recent Premium Upgrade

Did you just recently upgrade from Essential to Premium, and you’re still seeing ads? Sometimes the upgrade takes a bit of time.

Paramount recommends signing out of your Paramount Plus service and signing back in again. That refresh of your service can sometimes remove the ads if you’ve already upgraded to Premium.

You’re Watching Certain Shows With Special Rights

As Paramount acknowledges, certain selected shows on the Paramount+ service have special streaming rights. This means that they’re required to show commercials during two 15-second periods in each stream.

Paramount calls these “promotional interruptions” instead of commercials, but to the viewer, they’re basically the same thing. This likely has to do with the rights that Paramount has negotiated for certain third-party content.

If you’re a Premium subscriber and your commercial breaks are limited to 2 fifteen-second breaks per stream—and if the ads are mostly about other Paramount Plus shows—you’re probably seeing one of these “promotional interruptions.”

It’s a little sneaky, but at least the interruptions are short!

You’re watching Live TV

Paramount Plus offers options for streaming live TV. That’s awesome, since it lets you see sports and local news live as it’s happening.

If you’re streaming live tv, though, you’ll see the exact programming you’d see if you tuned into the stream on broadcast tv or cable. That includes any commercials that would be present in the live broadcast.

Your local broadcaster shows those commercials to everyone, whether they’re watching over the air or via a streaming service. Since you’re getting the live feed of the channel, that feed includes any commercials you’d see on the channel.

Conclusion

If you’re seeing commercials on Paramount Plus, check your plan level, see if you’re experiencing a “limited promotional interruption” (it should be 15 seconds or less), and determine if the show you’re watching is live.
