Why Are They Rioting In Philadelphia Right Now

On a Tuesday night in Philadelphia’s Center City, videos emerged on social media depicting extensive looting by large groups, following a peaceful protest outside City Hall. The police detained 15 to 20 individuals, a significant number of whom were juveniles, in connection with the looting and recovered two firearms. Acting Police Commissioner John Stanford conveyed during a news conference that the first indications of break-ins were reported soon after 8 p.m., shortly after the peaceful dispersion of protesters.

Why Are People Rioting and Looting in Philadelphia?

The earlier protest was assembled in response to the dismissal of murder and other charges against a Philadelphia police officer who fatally shot a driver, Eddie Irizarry, through a rolled-up window, triggering community outrage. However, Stanford emphasized that the supporters of Irizarry and many of the protesters who were at City Hall peacefully had no involvement with the subsequent looting. The protest concluded without any incident around 7:30 p.m., and the individuals involved in the looting were described as “criminal opportunists” exploiting the situation, unconnected to the earlier assembly. “What we had tonight was a bunch of criminal opportunists take advantage of a situation and make an attempt to destroy our city,” Stanford stated, clearly dissociating the incident from the peaceful protest earlier.

Philadelphia Municipal Judge Wendy Pew dismissed all charges, including murder, against Officer Mark Dial, following the fatal shooting of Irizarry. The incident occurred during a vehicle stop, with Dial asserting self-defense, firing through the window of Irizarry’s sedan. Defense lawyer, Brian McMonagle, emphasized that Dial perceived a threat, mistaking a knife for a gun. The District Attorney’s Office is appealing the dismissal, citing bodycam footage as crucial evidence, which contradicts initial police statements, showing Irizarry inside his vehicle during the shooting.

Irizarry’s erratic driving led to the stop, with Officer Michael Morris testifying that Irizarry had raised a knife as officers approached. The DA, Larry Krasner, criticized Dial’s lack of cooperation, leading to his suspension with intent to dismiss. The family of Irizarry maintains that the bodycam footage validates Irizarry’s innocence, demanding a stringent penalty for Dial. Contrarily, the defense insists on the justification of Dial’s actions given the perceived threat. The dismissal has spurred controversy, with debates centering around the interpretation of actions caught on the body-worn camera and the implications of the perceived threat on the justification of the use of deadly force.

Since the George Floyd riots in 2020, people are more likely than ever to riot and cause unrest in the streets due to a court case that involves a police officer injuring or fatally shooting a civilian. This kind of violence will take place regardless of whether the looters even fully understand the details of the case. It has turned into the worst kind of mob mentality, resulting in hundreds of people showing up to commit acts of violence simply because they are programmed to hate police officers.

The looting saw up to 100 young people infiltrating Center City, as per numerous 911 calls, with social media footage displaying instances of break-ins at various establishments including an Apple store, Foot Locker, and Lululemon. Visuals depicted individuals, clad in masks and hoodies, fleeing from stores with police officers intervening and apprehending several. CBS Philadelphia reported an incident involving the assault of a security guard at Foot Locker.

Videos of police officers apprehending masked criminals and using force to subdue them have gone viral all over social media, and they are filmed by people who are laughing at the chaos unfolding in front of them. The scenes look and sound like they could be taken from Gotham.

In one viral clip that was captured from a livestream of @dayjiamainpage on Instagram, a large group of criminals was seen breaking into a liquor store, with the person filming screaming, “Everybody must eat! Everybody must eat!”

The city’s managing director, Tumar Alexander, labeled the disorder as disrespectful to the Irizarry family, who had consistently conveyed their desire for peace, justice, and answers through various media channels. “And these criminal opportunists just took advantage of this tonight,” Alexander expressed, underlining the exploitation of the peaceful appeal of the aggrieved family by those engaging in looting.

Stanford, providing updates on the situation, stated that by late Tuesday, the chaos had predominantly been contained, reiterating the non-tolerance policy of the department towards such disruptions. “We made arrests and we will continue to make arrests until we have all the individuals or a number of the individuals that have been responsible for what we’ve seen tonight in custody,” he stated emphatically, reflecting the resolve to restore order and hold those responsible accountable.

He also encouraged the public to aid the police in apprehending those engaged in the looting or in selling stolen goods by reporting them. “Give us that information so that we can make those apprehensions and get those people in custody,” urged Stanford, highlighting the crucial role of collective responsibility in mitigating such instances of disorder. He conveyed the urgency of curbing such “nonsense” to prevent further strain on the city’s harmony and order.

Sadly, many people believe that this riot is just the beginning. As we move into election year, there will likely be many more opportunities for criminals to take to the streets and cause unrest in order to make a political statement, even if they are being used as pawns to send the message.

“Philadelphia shows how bad it’s gonna get next year. I can’t emphasize this enough and for my own karma must continue nagging you people. This isn’t the same country. You need to be prepared. This isn’t some short term thing you watch happen. You’ll be an involuntary participant,” filmmaker and attorney Mike Cernovich wrote on X.

“Next year is going to get really crazy. The ‘mostly peaceful’ riots will, of course, be the template, but who knows what kind of general crisis or state of emergency the regime will precipitate to try and maintain control. My guess is a total collapse of the southern border,” popular author known as Raw Egg Nationalist chimed in.

Election years are always known to be filled with drama, political surprises, and violence. Just look at what took place in 2020, from the pandemic to the George Floyd responses around the country. Nobody knows what 2024 holds, but judging by what has been leading up to it, we’re in for a bumpy ride.
