Derrick Rose has yet to log a single minute for the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs. That may come as a bit of a surprise for those who didn’t watch the team during the regular season, but he’s been out of the rotation since the start of December.
Rose still believes that he’s able to contribute on the floor. “I still got a lot left in the tank, so it’s about being patient,” he recently told Andscape’s Marc Spears.

At age 34 and after multiple injuries, Rose obviously isn’t the player that he once was during his 2011 MVP campaign. But it was only two years ago that he finished third in Sixth Man of the Year voting, and last season he was averaging a productive 12 points per game off the bench. So why isn’t he playing?

Rose has fallen out of the rotation due to two reasons.
First, his play has dropped off. Most of his value comes on the offensive end, and he wasn’t shooting the ball well this season. He was connecting on a career-low 38 percent of his field goals and only 30 percent of his 3-pointers. That led to a career-low average of 5.6 points per game.

Second, the Knicks have younger and better options that they want to play in front of Rose. They already have Jalen Brunson, Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, and Josh Hart at the guard position. Coach Tom Thibodeau also wanted to give minutes to develop second-year player Miles McBride. That has left Rose out of the rotation.
Rose has a very good relationship with both Thibodeau and McBride. He even had McBride over for Thanksgiving last season. He has taken the benching in stride.
“I can’t complain when we’re winning games,” Rose told the New York Daily News. “If we were losing, I’d probably be mad. But we’re winning and playing basketball so I really can’t complain.”
Rose has been praised for his leadership even while not playing.

Probably not. The Knicks have a lot of depth at guard, and Thibodeau is known to shorten his rotations during the playoffs. Rose will likely only play in blowouts again.
Rose is still a popular player, and Knicks fans cheered wildly when he did get some minutes at the end of the team’s Game 3 blowout win against the Cavs.

Derrick Rose contract details
Rose could be a free agent after these playoffs conclude. The final year of his deal is a team option.
Rose initially signed a 3-year $44 million contract with the Knicks. The deal will have a cap hit of just over $15 million in the 2023-24 season.
He may still be able to help a team next season if he is let go and decides to sign somewhere else.
