Why Did Beckham Leave Manchester United

Ryan Giggs has revealed that Manchester United sold David Beckham in 2003 because ‘he was arguing every other week’ and ‘it was getting too much.’

Beckham fell out with Sir Alex Ferguson, with the United manager kicking a boot in the dressing room that struck him above the eye following a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup.

With their relationship beyond repair, Beckham was sold to Real Madrid that summer for £25million, the highest profile departure from Old Trafford after a bust-up with the boss.

But Giggs says the feud between Beckham and Ferguson had been simmering away for some time and his sale was the best for all parties.

Asked on beIN Sports about Ferguson’s willingness to axe star players who crossed him, Giggs said: ‘I think the majority of the time it was for football reasons.

‘It was to get someone in or the player maybe losing that influence. Or it was just the time.

‘The likes of David Beckham it was getting too much, where he was arguing every other week and it was just time for both parties to move and that happened on a few occasions.’

United had been beaten 2-0 by bitter rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford in the fifth round of the FA Cup when Ferguson flew into one of his infamous ‘hairdryer’ rants at his team after the final whistle.

The Scot kicked out at a stray boot on the floor, which flew across the room and struck Beckham above his right eye and required stitches. Beckham arrived for training the next day wearing a plaster over the wound.

Ferguson wrote in his autobiography: ‘He was about 12 feet from me. Between us lay a row of boots. David swore. I moved towards him, and as I approached I kicked a boot.

‘It hit him right above the eye. Of course he rose to have a go at me and the players stopped him. “Sit down,” I said. “You’ve let your team down. You can argue as much as you like.”

‘The next day the story was in the press. In public an Alice band highlighted the damage inflicted by the boot. It was in those days that I told the board David had to go.’

But Ferguson also said Beckham’s work-rate had dropped with his head apparently turned by Real Madrid.

He said: ‘In his final season with us, we were aware that David’s work-rate was dropping and we had heard rumours of a flirtation between Real Madrid and David’s camp.

‘The main issue was that his application level had dropped from its traditionally stratospheric level.’

Beckham was memorably named among the substitutes for the second leg of United’s Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid that season as his relationship with Ferguson worsened.

He came off the bench to score twice but couldn’t rescue the tie, which United lost 4-3 on aggregate.
