The following year, Keeshan made his comeback to local TV, on WABC-TV, Channel 7. He took part in a new children’s show called Time for Fun. On the show, he played Corny the Clown. Unlike when he played his first character, this time he spoke. Then, he also started a program for preschoolers known as Tinker’s Workshop as the grandfather-like Tinker.

Inspired by Tinker’s Workshop, Bob Keeshan and his best friend Jack Miller created Captain Kangaroo and submitted the concept to the CBS network when they were looking for innovative approaches to children’s TV programming. The concept was approved by CBS and it premiered on October 3, 1955. Keeshan starred as the title character, Captain Kangaroo. When asked to describe the character he played, he said it was based on the warm relationship between grandparents and children. He served as the host of the show for about three decades. Everyone loved the show and it was a massive success.

During the 1964-1965 season, Keeshan had Mister Mayor. Just like in Captain Kangaroo, he also played as the central character in Mister Mayor.

In addition, Bob Keeshan recorded a lot of albums for Columbia Records, Golden Records and RCA-Victor. Some of them were songs that he performed with other characters of Captain Kangaroo. The Scandal

In 1997, Bob Keeshan was accused by a former child performer on the show for sexually abusing him during the time when they had a program together. According to him, Keeshan touched him inappropriately and engaged in other sexual activities with him. These things were done during rehearsals and performances.

Actually, that former child performer was not the only one. After he came out, more former child performers followed his step. All of them shared similar stories. From that moment, it was clear that the accusations against Bob Keeshan were not made up.

Upon finding out about everything, Bob Keeshan did not admit his wrongdoings and remained innocent until he had his last breath in 2004. In 1998, the man was indicted on charges of rape, sexual abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child. Media was everywhere during the trial and the scene was chaotic. At the time, there were a few former child performers who testified to the abuse they had suffered. A comprehensive case against him was brought by the prosecution. The defense team of Keeshan denied all the accusations and said that everything was false. In addition, they also believed that there was a conspiracy against him in the entertainment industry. Even though Keeshan and his defense team denied all the accusations, in the end, he was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 10-25 years in prison. They said that they were relieved that justice had been served and that Keeshan deserved to be punished for all the things that he had done.

The Impact of the Scandal

The scandal of Bob Keeshan impacted his personal life. His career ended that way. Not only his personal life, but also the children’s TV programming was impacted. Many parents were concerned with the TV programs that their children usually watched and the idols on these programs that they usually looked up to. Basically, they lost the trust that they had before. As a result, they preferred more educational and informative programming for their children as they wanted to make sure that their children would not watch inappropriate content.

Due to the scandal, many hosts and performers lost their jobs. Besides, the entertainment industry had to do background checks when hiring and screening the hosts and performers in order to prevent the same thing from happening. Overall, the whole industry became more cautious and vigilant.
