Why Did Harrow Kill Quinn

Season 1 – The cases of the week in the first season include: a woman killed by her fiancé via a forced drug overdose when she discovered that he was offloading debt properties on her, a woman killed with a medieval-style crossbow as part of a ritualistic hunt, a man killed by rat poison whose body was disposed via crocodile, a homeless woman who was accidentally killed by her own child, a woman who dies after a drug overdose that is connected to Harrow’s daughter, two Danish travelers whose murder is connected to an international millionaire, a mother and son who died in a car accident which leads to a 20-year-old bullet being found in the son’s brain, the death of a gay high school student at the hands of another student’s homophobic father, the death of an elderly man in a nursing home who was a former Nazi at the hands of a fellow resident and Auschwitz survivor, and Harrow being held hostage by a man who revives on the autopsy table.

Throughout the season, the mysterious major story arc that revolves around Harrow’s personal life kicks off in the pilot when the opening moments show a body being disposed in a river and it closes with the reveal that Harrow is the person disposing the body. This story arc is played out in a small way in each episode from Harrow’s mentor catching him falsifying DNA evidence, to an orthopaedic plate with a serial number being found, the reveal that the body belonged to a police officer, and the police officer revealed to be Robert Quinn, Fern’s (Harrow’s daughter) stepfather.

In the finale it’s revealed that Harrow killed Quinn after he discovered that Quinn molested Fern, however he only killed Quinn in self-defence after Quinn tried to kill him first to keep his secret.

The final moments of the finale provide the springboard into the second season when Harrow is shot by an unknown shooter.

Season 2 – The second season picks up from where we were left off with Harrow going to the hospital to be treated for his gun shot wound. Before he goes back to work he hooks up with a woman named Grace, who is later revealed to be the new forensic pathologist at work and his colleague, Lyle’s, niece.

The cases of the week in the second season include: a woman shot dead by police, two base jumpers who leapt to their death with the eventual reveal that one of them was given a dodgy parachute by his wife and the other tried to save him when he realised this, the discovery of a mummified body in a basement wall, a man who was murdered via jellyfish being forced down his throat, the murder of a man whose former prison cellmate is after Harrow (I’ll get to this), a car accident in Lyle’s home town, the murder of a wellness vlogger who promoted unconventional cancer treatments, and a mining magnate found in an Egyptian sarcophagus.

With the previous season’s Robert Quinn mystery closed, a new mystery is established with Harrow’s shooting. It’s revealed at the end of the premiere that the man police initially thought shot Harrow (who did confess to the crime) wasn’t the man who shot him. The man who shot Harrow calls him and tells him that he plans to ruin his life. The man, revealed to be Francis Chester, a convicted serial killer who Harrow helped put away, does this by framing Fern for drug possession, going after her boyfriend, Callan, through his work, murdering his colleague when he tries to dig deeper, attempting to murder Callan, and holding Fern hostage. Daniel manages to save both Callan’s and Fern’s lives, and kill Chester in a way that mimics a heart attack.

The most interesting element of this season’s major mysterious story arc was that it a present one. Harrow killing Robert Quinn happened in the past, whereas the Chester story arc played out in the present throughout the season and affected more people. It also revealed that Harrow’s boss, Maxine was corrupt.

The third season ends with Harrow attending a crime scene of a murdered man identified as his son.

Harrow Season 3 trailer (with some behind the scenes moments)

Season 3 – The third season picks up from where we were left off in the second season finale, with Harrow having to deal with the body of a man who is apparently his son. It’s revealed that Harrow knew he had a son before Fern. It later turns out that the man wasn’t his son when James, his actual son, shows up at the end of the premiere. The premiere also introduces Maxine’s replacement, Renae, who quickly lets him know that he won’t be given the same freedoms that Maxine gave him.

The cases of the week this season include: a homeless man being killed by two men, the murder of a man who lived as a vampire whose heart is missing, a woman who was murdered by her partner to prevent the reveal that she was his mistress and she killed his wife, the murder of a man who was shot in the woods which Harrow, Nichols and Fairley discover on their camping trip, the deaths of a teenage couple whose respective fathers are blaming the other’s child for their own child’s death, two men killed by gas from a World War One artillery shell, the murder of a Russian environmental activist and a Russian special forces agent, the death of a man at a Faro club duel, the death of an unemployed hairdresser, and a case involving an animal and an Ebola-like virus threatening the life of Renae’s son, Louie.

The story arc for this reason revolved around Harrow’s ostensibly long-lost son, James (although he knew about him) and his criminal ways, which results in his mother, Tanya (who was initially believed to be dead) coming out to Australia, Fern unintentionally becoming complicit in his schemes, and James getting kidnapped by Mila, the mother of the man initially believed to be him. Harrow eventually hooks up with Tanya and saves James’ life in the finale, managing to give the millions of dollars he stole to Fern. Tanya tells Harrow in the finale that James isn’t actually his son after all and James escapes with Harrow’s boat. The final moments of the third season have Harrow suggesting to Fern they buy a boat and go to Bora Bora (a callback to the pilot). Interesting side note, Gruffudd directed the second episode.

In terms of ranking all three seasons, I’d go 2, 1 and 3. I described the second season as stellar, especially it’s conclusion, while I felt the first season was slow to start but gained much needed momentum and traction when it approached the halfway mark. I felt that the third season was the weakest due to the slow progression of the James story arc and that arc becoming a complete waste with the reveal that James wasn’t Harrow’s son after all, as well as the inconsistency of Harrow and Grace’s subplot as love interests. I haven’t heard or read any announcements of Harrow being renewed for a fourth season.

I hope it is renewed but if it isn’t, the third season finale provides a decent close to the show.
