Well, the thought just occurred to me, but please don’t blame me if I don’t get the facts right? It has been a while since I watched Root A.

In Root A, Eto was in fact at the hideout with the rest, and not away like she should have been … to raid Cochlea. I think Tatara was there too…?

The truth is that Kaneki knew that he couldn’t escape when Eto circling him. She’s too powerful, someone that he couldn’t beat even if he died trying. Even if he was to escaped himself, the Anteiku group would be massacre by her. He stayed because he had no other choice, it was a bargain to leave the Anteiku group alone let them go. It’s probably nonverbal but both of them knew it.

Kaneki gave himself over to Aogiri in order to protect them.

Well, that said, later, Kaneki seems to be trying to leave Aogiri right? Right the moment that he tried that, what did Eto do?

I think Eto definitely had something to do with Kaneki joining Aogiri, but I don’t think it was because she threatened him or Anteiku directly in that scene.

We’ve seen her manipulate people before, and she never had to threaten them to do so. (See the Yasuhisa twins, Amon’s CCG investigations, and even Hinami.) Hinami is actually really important to what I think Eto offered Kaneki to join Aogiri: strength. The same thing she offered Hinami.

When Hinami met with Takatsuki in the coffee shop, Takatsuki said that Hinami wasn’t strong enough to be able to help Kaneki, and offered Hinami her card. That’s the reason Hinami joined Aogiri – to become stronger in order to protect the people she cared about.

That’s also the reason Ayato joined Aogiri – to protect Touka. And of course, that’s the reason Kaneki joined Aogiri.

But he did so freely. He’d already escaped Aogiri’s hideout with Touka and the others. There was no reason to go back. But he did. He went back on his own, and that’s when he met Eto.

At that point, Kaneki already knew Ayato joined Aogiri for strength. And Kaneki knew that he needed to become stronger – that was the reason he ate Yamori’s kagune. He was considering following Ayato’s path, and I think whatever Eto said to him during that scene when he returned to the collapsing hideout was not a threat, but something that confirmed for Kaneki that he would become stronger if he joined Aogiri.

And ultimately, he did. He became a powerful half-kakuja. It just didn’t turn out quite the way he had in mind in the end.

But, yeah, I do not think Eto threatened him. That’s not how she works. She manipulates people into making the choices she wants them to, not with threats of violence, but by seeing what it is they want and offering that to them.

Oooh! You have a good point. //scratches cheek// I’d admit I guess I don’t fully understand Eto that full well yet. The way Eto gives Nashiro and Kurona reasons to questioning Kanou, and Amon to question CCG is really a good point to consider.

She always the one to raises the question, although manipulate people to join Aogriri.. She must be also fairly good with it too, considering how many followers she has. Shachi joined Aogiri… and yet he left later ( I think she gave him a reason to join, in which to find Rize). Hinami is fairly to convince to join, she’s young and orphaned, everyone around her has left. Though, I guess it’s true that I did jump on conclusion there with Eto threatening Kaneki. (I would think it’s nonverbal and her presence alone would be enough threat do him but)

Hahaha, it’s more like because Eto typically.. hates the idea of … family, and such right? In fact, she loves orphaned very much ( I think ) and since Anteiku is such a family to Kaneki .. I thought it might relates. and since Eto usually has the protagonist loses something dear to him before dying himself…

Ahhh, that said but Eto is so mysterious, I definitely should try and work harder to understand her. //shakes fist// You’re really amazing for pointing out those things! Thank you!

You’re definitely right about Eto seeming to dislike families! I mean, she goes out of her way to hurt Shinohara when she sees how much Juuzou cares about him. And you’re right about Shachi too! I think Rize was definitely his reason for joining Aogiri, and he’s no longer with them now that Rize is gone too.

And, it could be that she threatened him. We really don’t know what happened in that scene, and the reason why Kaneki joined Aogiri was never fully explained. (I remember seeing somehwere that an early draft shown in one of the PVs for Root A said Kaneki joined to kill the One Eyed King! But that doesn’t seem to be why he joined in the finished version.)

Eto is certainly mysterious, that’s part of the reason I love her so much and enjoy thinking about her so much. 🙂
