ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA: Kayla Unbehaun’s rescue has apparently ignited a furious debate over whether her biological mother should face criminal charges for abducting her six years ago. Unbehaun, who turned 15 in January, was just 9 years old when her non-custodial mother Heather Unbehaun abducted her from South Elgin, Illinois on July 5, 2017.
Over the years, authorities relentlessly searched for the mother-daughter duo but found no evidence. The teen was finally found on May 13 when an employee at Plato’s Closet in Asheville, North Carolina, recognized her from “well-publicized media” and alerted the police. Authorities then immediately tracked down Kayla and took her into protective custody. After Kayla was found alive, her father, Ryan Iskerka issued a statement through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Kayla Unbehaun: Illinois girl who vanished in 2017 found in NC, mom arrested for abduction
Netflix’s ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ may have helped find Kayla Unbehaun who was abducted by her mom 6 years ago
‘I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe’
“I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe. I want to thank [Elgin, Illinois Police Department, and Fire Department], the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and all law enforcement agencies who assisted with her case,” Iskerka said in the statement. He was also the one who filed Kayla and Heather’s missing report in 2017. Iskerka was given full custody of his then-nine-year-old daughter after Heather failed to comply with previous court decisions pertaining to their custody issue. As per the custodial agreement, Heather was permitted supervised visits while Kayla lived with Iserka, his wife, and their two girls.

In 2017, Iserka consented to let Kayla join Heather on a camping trip for the July 4 vacation. He was supposed to pick up Kayla on July 5 but when he reached Heather’s grandfather’s house, he found the mother-daughter duo were nowhere to be seen. After asking around, he discovered that Heather had left the area with Kayla. Following a missing complaint, authorities issued a felony arrest warrant for Heather on July 29, 2017.
‘The girl’s mom took her out of a situation and she’s happy’
Following Kayla’s rescue, authorities immediately arrested Heather and held her on a $250,000 bond, which she has since posted. The mother is currently facing child abduction charges, according to WGN-TV in Chicago. Kayla’s case has since garnered immense social media attention with many users celebrating the father-daughter reunion. However, there were also some users, who expressed outrage over why a mother taking her little girl would even be considered an abduction. “Kinda hard to consider it an abduction when she was with her mother the entire time,” a user wrote on Twitter.
“Her birth mother* took her. Stop with the legal bullshit and state the facts. The girl’s mom took her out of a situation and she’s happy. Move tf on,” a second user said while the third asserted “This is Not kidnapping by any sense. It is a mother risking jail to be with her biological daughter! No truer love than this. Legal technicalities standing between this is just sad and depressing.” One more user on TikTok said, “That’s her mother. you can’t kidnap someone you gave birth to. Maybe my gut feeling is wrong but I feel like the mother was trying to protect her?” “If she was a danger to her child why was she found safe, somethings not adding up,” another user said, according to Your Tango.
