FBI: Most Wanted is the first spin-off of Dick Wolf’s FBI. It follows special agents working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Fugitive Task Force, which tracks down and captures some of the most dangerous criminals on the FBI Most Wanted list. The series first premiered on CBS in 2020 and is currently on its fifth season.

Alexa Davolos came on board during Season 3, starring as Kristin Gaines, a Navy veteran-turned-FBI agent who joins the Fugitive Task Force as a replacement for Kenny Crosby (played by Kellan Lutz). After playing Kristin for two seasons, news broke in August 2023 that Davalos would not be returning to the show for Season 5. Nina Chase took over Kristin’s spot on the team, and while fans were glad that her replacement was at least a familiar face, they were devastated to see the fan-favorite special agent go. So, why did Kristin Gaines leave the team? We have all the details on her exit below.

What happened to Kristin Gaines on FBI: Most Wanted?

Kristin Gaines, FBI: Most Wanted

What happened to Kristin Gaines on FBI: Most Wanted? Although we still don’t really know why Kristin left the team, newcomer Nina Chase provided some hints in the Season 5 premiere.

Nina and task force leader Remy Scott (Dylan McDermott) got off on wrong foot on her first day after she questioned if Kristin’s departure had anything to do with him. “I guess I just didn’t care for the tone of Nina’s question. It’s like she was implying something about me,” Remy explained while talking to his therapist. He later addressed the situation with Nina, who said there were rumors floating around that he and Kristin had a relationship outside of work.

In Season 4, the pair had a bit of a flirtation going on but they kept their relationship professional. During a 2022 interview with TV Insider, McDermott discussed the two characters’ dynamic, explaining that Remy “trusts” Kristin. “He also realizes how intelligent she is and he defers to her intelligence at times and believes in her. That’s not always an easy thing,” he said. “She’s his right hand. She’s right there through everything. I think really the bottom line is that he has complete trust in her.”

Remy is clearly struggling to replace Kristin; he even admits that he’s been through two new agents since she left. As for his tension with her replacement, VanSanten explained in an interview with TV Guide ahead of the premiere that Nina and Remy are “not always going to get along.” She continued, “They’re not always going to agree. But that’s where trust is built, relationships grow, and understanding one another on a deeper level is really important.”

Why did Alexa Davalos leave FBI: Most Wanted?

Alexa Davalos, FBI Most Wanted

In August 2023, Deadline reported that Davalos would not be returning to FBI: Most Wanted. The actress was allegedly “informed by a producer on set” that she was not going to be invited back for Season 5 ahead of her last Season 4 scene. While the decision for Davalos to leave wasn’t seemingly her choice, the outlet reported that the conversation surrounding her exit was amicable.

Davalos has yet to speak on her departure publicly and it is unclear if she will appear at all in the new season to wrap up Kristin’s storyline. Fans are hoping her character isn’t killed off, leaving room for Davalos to pop back up in the FBI universe in the future.

FBI: Most Wanted airs on CBS on Tuesdays at 10/9c and streams on Paramount+.
